Today we’d like to introduce you to Iva Teixeira.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Iva. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My second child, Marley, was born when I was 35. The months following his birth were filled with joy but also with sleepless nights, a crazy amount of travel for my cool tech startup job, and a heightened need to spend quality time with my daughter who was in the throws of toddlerdom. And while all of the above made me feel intensely alive and excited about life, the skin on my face began to look a bit ashen, saggy and not at all inspiring.
I looked OLD! Facing myself in the mirror on a daily basis became more of a “Let’s see if we can do anything about this mess” than a “Hello sunshine!” moment. See, I am not a girly girl and I consider myself a pretty rational, empowered and confident woman, endowed with all kinds of age-defying spunk. So, this new normal did not create panic or fear, or anything… other than a slight frustration. You know, like the feeling you have when you get a zit or your period, on your Caribbean vacation.
After a few months of trying to correct wrinkles with my powerful brainwaves, I decided that it was time to figure out the hack to sagging facial skin. I mean, we new-age girls, have hacks and tools for everything. Need food? Get Blue Apron. Need style? StitchFix box coming in 4 days. Need toothpaste? Press the Amazon button. So, I thought to myself that there must be a tool, a button, a service or something for getting the right skincare. It was just a matter of finding it. And, I thought to myself that just like the ad says, “I am worth it” and I could find it… in my spare time.
So, I launched an exhaustive search for great skincare advice, and for close to two years, spent most of my free time reading blogs, stopping by beauty stores, talking to dermatologists, seeking friends’ recommendations, and buying and trying various products… all to no avail! Bloggers are twenty-somethings who have not had kids, beauty consultants just pushed the deal of the week on me, dermatologists wanted to do procedures, friends really wanted to help but their skin wasn’t my skin, and trial and error is a bad strategy to find products in an industry with hundreds of thousands of offerings.
And while the experience was frustrating, and I did not find the perfect routine for my skin, what it taught me was two things:
1. I am not alone in my dissatisfaction! Most women I talked to told me they have not found good skincare routines that address their specific needs.
2. The beauty industry is very ugly indeed. Established brands use over 100 terribly harmful ingredients (carcinogens, hormone disruptors allergens) and the FDA does not even require warning labels to that effect. And the big marketing machines built by multi-billion dollar concerns blast elusively seductive messages increasing our desire for toxin-laden products we do not understand.
From that point on, my mission became to empower all good faces out there with skincare safety and efficacy advice and product recommendations. What’s more, we are on a mission to personalize that advice to the needs of everyone that comes to The Good Face Project seeking direction.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting something new is never easy. At first, you are all alone, standing on a bar stool, giving your lungs the workout of their lives…
What helped in my case was that the skincare industry is so broken that amazing people I meet are appalled at, and moved into action by, the facts I provide.
This is what helped me find co-founders whose technical genius will enable an extraordinary experience for the consumer who comes to The Good Face Project.
