Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Kuchan.
Greg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
To tell the whole story, we need to back up to shortly after I graduated college. Up until graduation, I worked manual labor jobs in many different aspects of construction. My whole family is in construction, and that is what I grew up doing. Then, I moved to Thailand and became a SCUBA instructor. That took me to St. Thomas US Virgin Islands. I lived there for three years working in the yachting industry teaching sailing and scuba diving. Working on multi-million-dollar yachts, there was an omnipresent focus on maximizing a positive client experience.
Working with people from all points of the globe built a strong base of effective communication to create the best experience for the client. Since moving to San Diego and becoming a Real Estate agent my business has been built on relationships created through multiple social groups that I am apart of. Having a personal relationship with all of my clients is an important part of how my business is run. I consider myself a consultant, not a salesperson. My job is to get to the core reason “why,” why are you buying, selling, moving, etc. Then reverse engineer the situation to get to the best possible path to accomplish theirs why.
Real estate is one of the biggest purchases a person will make in their life. The level of emotions attached to such a big moment in one’s life creates a situation of possible stressors to make a complicated process one to remember. This is why I have a team surrounding me. My team and I have created a top-notch system with specialists in each phase of the transaction providing a full-service real estate experience. So when we do encounter a problem, there are multiple people ready to address the problem at all times.
My passion and interest in Real Estate is rooted in the ability to help people. I’m always striving to improve my surroundings and myself. Sharing the steps that I have taken, the knowledge and experience I have gained, and make a difference in the world around me. As long as you are continuously striving to make a positive difference and surround yourself with good people, great opportunities will present themselves.
To experience the difference yourself, give me a call!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to becoming successful in any field is fraught setbacks and challenges. The barrier of entry to become a real estate agent is very low. The style in which companies run their businesses vary greatly, so finding the optimal place to start is crucial. Make sure you align yourself with a company who’s ethos matches yours. Then put your head down and work. Put in the time and the road will be “paved in gold” BUT as any entrepreneur knows, sticking to the plan and being consistent is difficult when no one is keeping you accountable to your goals.
In my continuous pursuit of success, I have watched all of my savings disappear in the first year and a half of becoming a Realtor. My personal relationships were strained, and I lost some friends. I fell into a depression that lasted about a year. It was difficult guiding some of my clients when their purchase/sale became stressful. With that being said, it opened up my eyes to the unknown struggles people are going through on a daily basis.
My empathy for that “jerk” who cut you off in traffic or was being rude to me has increased exponentially. I now approach all situations in a collaborative mentality looking for solutions so that everyone feels like they have been heard and serviced to their wants and needs. The difficult times make us better if we can stick through them long enough to learn from them and grow.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think I would change any part of this journey. My advice for others trying to get into real estate is to interview a lot of different agents and companies out there.
See what they like dislike about their job, company, etc. and have a full picture of what you are about to embark on… and get ready to put in long hours and work seven days a week.
This is an industry that you must be constantly practicing and learning as the market is changing daily.
