Meet Grotesqua

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grotesqua.

Grotesqua, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started to drag on one Halloween night back in 2013 when I was about 19. I went out, got some attention and realized I wanted to keep doing it. I was pretty much underage at the time, so I was sneaking into clubs using a friends ID and just club/bar hopping. I got approached by a troupe of performers that were looking for some entertainers with Some different looks. I said why not and joined them. I got my first paid gigs working with them everything was great for a few months and then the numbers started dwindling and people started leaving people left and the few that stayed started working together… we have been performing with each other ever since going on five years now. We do group show-stopping numbers with choreography and costumes. Enough about them though. Being a drag queen has gave me opportunities that weren’t available to me before and I pretty much owe my home town success to drag. It’s kinda my armor, I’m normally so shy and introverted but once the hair, makeup and nails come on I’m a fierce force that makes everyone crap their pants.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having a certain look has brought some obstacles but nothing I couldn’t get over.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Grotesqua is my vessel. I lip-sync, dance, I make my own costumes. I’m known for my huge lips and Isosceles triangle eyeliner… one thing I guess that would set me apart from others is my personality… yeah yeah yeah everyone says that. But if it wasn’t for having a great personality, I probably would be still dancing for tips. Always make friends with everyone even if you don’t like them. Especially if you don’t like them.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was really quiet, kept to myself and introverted but I was very creative and good with my hands, so I was usually in my room drawing or making dolls to play with.
