Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Hernandez.
Helen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a San Diego native, I have been a hairstylist for 32 years now. My path in the hairstylist industry has carried me through several areas in San Diego including the SDSU College Area, Mission Valley, Hill Crest, Pacific Beach, and Bonita. I moved to Costa Rica and owned my own salon for 14 years and now I have been back in San Diego for about 13 years happily raising my two children alongside my husband.
Approximately three years ago I started working for myself again as a booth renter, and it has been great being able to satisfy my clients doing what I love. I’ve had a tremendous journey in the hairstylist industry, and I’m looking forward to the many years ahead as a hairstylist.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, in my career, I worked where I have wanted and have had great experiences along the way. The only true struggle that I had to overcome was when my family made the decision to move back to the states, and I was faced with the decision of closing down the salon that I had worked endless hours to build. When you have been accustomed to working for yourself coming back into the corporate world is an artistic struggle. I am happy to say that I have once again become an independent stylist.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I specialize in hair coloring, balayage, and highlighting techniques. I am certified in Brazilian Blowout, and I have a lot of experience round brushing hair straight. I do women and men’s haircuts, conditioning treatments and, Olaplex treatments.
I take pride in the attention to detail that I place into my work, I am able to really listen to my client’s wants and needs, and I am able to bring to light their desired goals. It’s not only important to make suggestions and recommend different hairstyles and hair color but to really communicate and make sure you understand each other to get great results. There is nothing more gratifying than your client walking out feeling fabulous!!
What were you like growing up?
Since I can remember, I’ve always loved doing hair and makeup. Making people laugh and listening to people’s stories as a hairstylist I get to do all three!!
