Today we’d like to introduce you to Harmony Murillo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In my life, I have been fortunate enough to travel outside the country from a young age.
Exploring in these different places definitely started my love for photography. I wanted to capture every beautiful landscape and every old building with exquisite architecture. Not only did I want to remember it for myself but to show others in order to inspire like I was.
I started going to college out of high school, but really had no idea what I was going to do in the long run. I wanted to find something that would allow me to create and keep my interest. During that time photography wasn’t even a thought when I started to assess my future.
Then I started going to music festivals. My first transformational music festival was Lightning In A Bottle back in 2013. I was instantly hooked! Since then I’ve been to countless other festivals along with Lightning in a bottle every year since then. My experiences at these events has truly help me grow into the person I am today. It allowed me to drop my fears that I had about my capabilities. And to just go for it. About two years ago it finally clicked, and I decided to pursue photography.
Since then, I have built my portfolio, worked as an assistant for a successful photographer and started working at different events along clothing brands. Everything I have learned about my craft so far has been self-taught or by working with my mentor.
Whether it’s been assisting on sets, a Youtube video or a textbook, new photography techniques are endless. Which is another reason why I love doing this. It allows me to be constantly learning and gaining new experiences within this field.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not. But what dream is easy though. I’d love to be doing photography full time. But starting out in this field is a bit tough. It’s all about getting your name out there which in turn will get me more consistent jobs. I understand that I will be where I want to be eventually.
I’m just grateful for the experiences and jobs I’ve gotten so far. Each photoshoot, event or festival has been a learning experience. Even looking back a year ago I have grown so much; as a person and a photographer.
Harmony Skye Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is me and what I can do. I specialize in brand, event and music festival photography. I am definitely proud of every picture I have produced. I’d say my favorite subject is people. I love to capture that candid moment within a person or between people.
At events or shows, I may not know anyone I’m taking pictures of but in that quick moment I do get to experience a part of them. When I am working with brands I get to work with incredible people. Coming together with others to execute a vision has been my proudest moments in this industry.
Whatever I am photographing I try to be authentic and relay a genuine experience through my work.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is such a weird concept. With photography, I’d like to get to a point where I can have consistent income with it so I don’t have to work my other jobs. It’s the only work that truly makes me feel alive. From my start in this field, I’ve really tried to focus on the little accomplishments.
Celebrating every moment that’s pushing me higher to where I want to be. I want to do this for the rest of my life. But for right now it’s all about living in the moment and picking the right roads to take to reach my goals.
Also, I hope that my work does inspire others. If my art can do that for someone else I feel like that is a true success.
