Meet Heidi Klippel of Law Offices of Heidi Klippel in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Klippel.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was a young girl, I wanted to help animals. I wanted to be a veterinarian. Thankfully my mom knew I was not medically minded as the sight of blood made my faint. She encouraged me to pursue a different area that could help animals. I decided to become a U.S. Senator as I wanted to reform animal slaughter practices. Once I started law school, I decided I was no longer interested in politics and wanted to help people and animals. Estate planning was the vehicle towards helping people and animals.

I feel so blessed as I picked a career path I truly love. It is so fulfilling assisting people getting their legal affairs in order. It is nice to know they are taking care of their families and animals by having their estate plans in place. The hardest part of this job is helping clients when they lose a loved one. Death is never an easy part of life to know how to handle or how to prepare.

It is very fulfilling going home every night knowing I am making a difference and helping people and families; one estate plan at a time.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road as my parents told me if I wanted to go to college I needed to pay for it myself. As a young person, I had no idea how much of a gift it was for them to not help me financially. By having to pay for college myself, I realized at a young age the value of hard work, saving and planning. There were many months when I wondered how I would “borrow from Paul to pay Peter”.

Thankfully, by working hard and focusing on the end prize which was my college education, I feel like I learned lessons at a much younger age than I would have learned had my parents paid for my college. While my friends were out having fun, I was nose deep in a book studying at the library. While my friends were shopping for new cars with their parents, I was filling out yet another application for financial aid and grant money. I never knew how fulfilling it would be to accomplish this on my own.

There were times I would call my dad begging for money but he would stick to his guns and encourage me to take things one day at a time. This is what I do now, I take things one day at a time. Through hard work and planning, I learned how to swim and not sink. By not having everything given to me, I learned the power of discipline and accountability at a very young age. I also learned to go without and to need less. As an adult many of these early life lessons have benefited me in so many ways. I know now as a parent that it will be hard for me to do what my parents did. It would be easier to pay for my children’s college but I want them to learn as I did. I am so grateful to my parents for making the choice they did by not giving me everything and letting me find my own way.

Life is so very good!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Law Offices of Heidi Klippel story. Tell us more about the business.
I am an estate planning and corporate law attorney. We help clients put their trusts, wills, health care directives and financial powers of attorney in place. We assist clients plan for their potential future incapacitation as well as their death by getting their estates in order. We also handle probates, trust administrations, buy sell agreements, business incorporations, business compliance and business dissolutions.

The thing I am most proud of as a business owner is the customer service we provide our clients. When you call our firm and need to speak with your attorney, your attorney gets on the phone to assist you. We are a small firm which enables our entire staff to be knowledgeable about all clients and their individual needs. By being small, we can provide superior customer service as our clients don’t get “lost in the shuffle”.

I am very proud of the work we do and the service we provide. We have integrity and integrity is all that matters in business and relationships.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I honestly don’t know if I believe so much in “luck” but in hard work and dedication. Hard work is what got me to where I am. There was a lot of work, many sleepless nights and lots of planning involved. Business is good and life is even better.
