Meet Holly Haines of From My Impossibly Tiny Kitchen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Haines.

Holly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved cooking and sharing food. When Instagram hit the scene, I started posting my recipes with the hashtag “#frommyimpossiblytinykitchen” as a joke, which leads to a full recipe blog. The blog has to lead to so many opportunities, from making it to the Top 100 contestants on MasterChef Season 6 to competing against 5 professional chefs on NBC’s Food Fighters. Earlier this year, I released my first cookbook, “How to Eat Your Feelings”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but it’s always a fun one. When I wanted to start making videos for my recipes, I had to teach myself everything – from lighting to recording and editing. Then, I taught myself GarageBand to make simple background beats for the videos so YouTube couldn’t get me on the copyrights. There have been lots of learning curves, but I enjoy adding new skills to my arsenal.

Please tell us about From My Impossibly Tiny Kitchen.
I have a food blog called From My Impossibly Tiny Kitchen, where I showcase my love of food, recipe writing and photography. I’m most proud of recipes that really challenge my creativity, like the time I “pretzeled” a sticky bun (https://www.fmitk.com/pretzel-sticky-buns-with-nutella-and-hazelnuts-a-k-a-the-pretzky-bun/).

I love experimenting with traditional recipes and combining flavors. My ethnic background is Filipino and Black, and I love to bring those flavors together when I create dishes. Once, I threw a dinner party to celebrate both sides of my culture called “Ang Sarap, Bruh”, with dishes like adobo chicken and waffles and jackfruit cobbler (https://www.fmitk.com/ang-sarap-bruh-bi-racial-culinary-experiment/).

I also excel in this niche where music, food and puns meet. One of my favorite pun-filled menus was an Ode to Beyonce called We Like to Party (https://www.fmitk.com/we-like-to-party-culinary-ode-beyonce/).

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, everything happens how it needs to happen so I wouldn’t do anything differently. I taught myself HTML and Photoshop because I wanted a blog. I taught myself photography because I REALLY thought I wanted to be a lifestyle photographer until I realized I don’t really like shooting people.

I do, however, LOVE shooting food. At no point did I think these skills would converge to allow me to create a food blog, and eventually, write a cookbook. Everything happens how it’s supposed to happen.
