Meet Hugo Denat of TimeFlies in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugo Denat.

Hugo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always wanted to live abroad; I have always been attracted to living a life outside of my own country, France. Whether it would be for a short period of time or for a lifetime, I knew that’s what I wanted. Having visited 35 countries at that time, traveling has been for me a way to reset and gain perspective.

In September 2015, I decided to quit my job, quit the relationship I was in, and go backpacking in Central America, alone for three months, on an introspective journey…

After visiting Cuba, Mexico, I landed in Managua, Nicaragua and came across this American girl, San Diegan born and raised. We met for a few minutes and decided to meet again one week later in Costa Rica, and later spent a full week together in Panama.

She went back to California, I went back to Paris, and we FaceTimed every single day. We dated internationally for a year and a half, and I decided to move to San Diego in May 2017, we got married, and we have a baby boy on the way. That’s my story of how I arrived in San Diego.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a fairly smooth road so far – knock on wood – Some bumps along the way that pushed me to take decisions to change something about my life. I was working very hard as a strategy consultant in Europe, stretched myself thin and felt stuck. You know that feeling when you are on all fronts, and not moving the needle forward in any part of your life? I was close to burning out.

Self-awareness and consciousness helped me get to know my patterns and take the right decisions for my personal well-being. When I feel stuck, it means I need to change something. Being able to identify when you are heading towards a dead end requires humility and self-awareness. We all have a limited time on earth, we need to make the most of it and seek optimal self-accomplishment.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I have been working in Consulting since 2011, working for different industries specialized in Operational Strategy and Process Improvement. I came across a variety of clients throughout my career, but they all had one commonality: They are all busy.

Time is our most valuable commodity, and a lot of people have so many opportunities to be better at it, and ultimately completely change their lives. I personally do not believe in being busy. I am convinced that it is all about Mindset, Strategy, and the ability to take action. When you understand that, everyone can achieve great things if they want it and feel empowered to do so.

Thus, I coach people on time management methods and strategies, in order to help them get back in control of their own agenda, stop feeling overwhelmed, and save time for things that really matter to them. I started my Youtube Channel where I upload weekly videos, delivering tips, strategies, and simple exercises, and I am also working on creating an online course and doing some public speaking too.

Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan/how did they help?
I have never had official mentors or coaches, I am a self-learner trying to learn from any experience in life. I am convinced that if you have the right self continuous improvement mindset, you are headed in the right direction and you can only grow. The people that I should thank for being where I am today are all my clients, coworkers, managers and anyone that I crossed paths with professionally, but also my family that gives me every day the balance I need to thrive.
