Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugo Heredia Barrera.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story?
In the year 2010 I decided to have my own private gallery space to not only work in my art, but also a space to set up installations to photograph and create promotional material for my art projects, the idea was to create a show room to bring my art clients and collectors to view my art work and to see how they could be installed in private and public space.
As a contemporary fine art artist working in the San Diego area exhibiting and being represented by some fine art galleries in La Jolla and San Diego area and after exhibiting in public and private art spaces for some years I decided to stop working with other gallery spaces and venture myself to have my own private art gallery and studio space.
HB Punto Experimental slowly transformed from one idea to another becoming a place to exhibit and showcase not only my work, but art from artist from around the world from artist from Los Angeles, San Diego, The East Coast, Japan and The Netherlands just to mention some place. This art project transformed into a place to explore fine experimental art and it became very successful bring together great art projects and ideas.
As a curator, art collector and artist I am responsible for curating the art the gallery space presents and the project went to collaborate in other art projects in different places like Valle de Guadalupe Mexico bringing together artist from Los Angeles, San Diego and Mexico together in an art festival called Happening en el Valle.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been easy just because the art world doesn’t provide much income to sustain the art projects and that makes it hard to make things happen. Another hard part of the gallery space is bring the shows together and providing the artist the necessary things to make and install the shows.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the HB Punto Experimetal Gallery & Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
HB Punto Experimental Gallery and Studio is a Gallery space for fine experimental art projects which is basically non-existent in San Diego. Experimental art projects not often get the space for projections as experimental art is not very commercial which makes it hard to promote.
I am very proud of the gallery space because it became noticed and recognized as a place where people have to change to view some of the most experimental and unique art exhibits bringing artist from other parts of the world which most art places in San Diego would not bring to exhibit.
The impact of the Gallery space and the art shows become so strong that even KPBS, The San Diego city beach and Televisa Mexico wanted to see and do articles about the exhibitions and the art space.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see HB Punto Experimental bring together some of the most influential Contemporary experimental artist and putting together art exhibit in public places not only in San Diego, but other parts of the world.
