Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Turk.

Jacob Turk

Jacob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

Certainly! Here’s a brief walkthrough of my journey:

From a young age, I had a deep love for physical exertion. This passion led me to pursue collegiate football at San Diego State University (SDSU). However, despite my dedication and hard work, I faced the disappointment of being rejected from the team. This moment, though tough, became a pivotal turning point in my life.

Determined not to let this setback define me, I channeled my energy into fitness, nutrition, and workout regimens. I began by training many of my college friends, sharing my growing knowledge and enthusiasm. My efforts didn’t go unnoticed, and soon I was hired by Crunch Fitness in El Cajon. This opportunity allowed me to acquire certifications in bodybuilding and personal training, further solidifying my expertise.

As my reputation grew, I built a base of clientele and followers at EOS Fitness in Point Loma, where I honed my skills and expanded my influence. My commitment to understanding the intricacies of the human body – from physics and physiology to anatomy – became the cornerstone of my approach.

Today, I operate out of Werk Fitness, located in Mission Bay, this is a private training facility where I continue to spread my ideologies and learnings throughout the San Diego community. Through social media, in-person sessions, and online training, I reach a broad audience, inspiring others to achieve their fitness goals.

My journey is far from over. I am currently furthering my education at the University of San Marcos in their Doctor of Physical Therapy program, striving to deepen my understanding and impact in the field. My story is one of resilience, growth, and an unwavering passion for helping others achieve their best selves.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every road has speed bumps; it’s just a matter of if you can slow down and absorb the obstacle. My journey has certainly had its share of challenges, marked by doubt, rejection, and denial. From being a football reject at San Diego State University (SDSU) to becoming obsessed with fitness, I often felt socially isolated from my peers. The party culture at SDSU is enormous, and after my first year, I realized it wasn’t for me. I chose to put my head down, focus on my passions, and at the age of 20, I launched my own business, Turks Training.

Launching Turks Training was the result of countless long nights, earning certifications, and managing insurance and certification payments, all while handling a 20-unit semester load. Starting a business is one thing, but maintaining it is another. Without any assistance, I self-marketed and exposed my love of fitness to the community. Despite feeling isolated at times, I never felt useless. This business gave me something to work on and improve every single day, rather than giving up and returning to a public training gym.

In addition to the struggle to make my name known and respected, I faced rejection when applying to the SDSU Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Without any explanation for the rejection, I assumed I appeared uninteresting and unenticing to the school where I had spent 3.5 years earning my undergraduate degree in kinesiology.

Undeterred, I applied to the University of San Marcos Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and was ultimately accepted. I believe it’s crucial to allow yourself to get knocked down but always get back up stronger and more determined. My journey has been far from smooth, but each struggle has shaped me into the dedicated fitness professional I am today.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis taught me many valuable lessons, shaping my transition from a high school senior in a small town to a college student at San Diego State University. The pandemic emphasized the importance of making the most of our time, whether we’re in the public eye or behind closed doors.

During the lockdown, I found ways to stay connected with my passions, especially fitness. Despite the isolation, I committed to a daily routine of biking 10 miles, running 3 miles, and lifting weights. These activities not only kept me physically healthy but also provided a crucial mental escape from the overwhelming uncertainty of the times.

One of the most challenging aspects was the cancellation of significant milestones, like my high school graduation and senior prom. These events were supposed to be the culmination of years of hard work and shared memories. Their loss was deeply felt, but it also pushed me to proactively stay in touch with my friends. Virtual meetups, phone calls, and socially-distanced hangouts became our lifelines, and I cherished every moment of connection we managed to maintain.

This experience highlighted the necessity of valuing every opportunity for socialization. It reminded me that life is unpredictable, and we must savor each moment with the people who matter to us. The pandemic taught me resilience and adaptability, encouraging me to find joy and purpose even in solitude.

As I embarked on my college journey at San Diego State, these lessons remained with me. I approached new challenges with a greater appreciation for time and relationships, knowing that every moment is precious. The Covid-19 crisis has reshaped my perspective, reinforcing the importance of making the most of every situation, whether shared with others or spent in quiet reflection.
