Today we’d like to introduce you to Jagger and Kristi .
Hi Jagger and Kristi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We met working together and became a couple. We both worked separately in radio and decided we might like to do a show together. In 1996 we did just that at then Star 100.7 doing the afternoon show there. In 2002 we were took a morning show position at then My 94.1, moving to Magic 92.5 in 2005! We have been doing mornings at Magic ever since. We love our Magic listeners and sense of community we have here at Magic.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Is there such a thing as a smooth road?! Lol! Not really in radio. So from the personal perspective, we got married in 1997 and some would say a marriage and doing a show together would never work. Our agreement was, and still is 25 years later, if one of us feels it’s not working we get separate jobs! Fortunately, we have never had to do that and are grateful every day we get to do a show together! There are times we get on each others nerves but always manage to work through it.
From the professional side, there have been so many changes in radio through the years that have changed listening habits. For example, when once one only listened on terrestrial radio, maybe in their homes or car, there are now so many more options. Now, with live streaming and apps listeners have the advantage of listening wherever they are to whatever they want, including the millions of podcasts there are out there now. It has been a challenge for us little radio shows to remain relevant and memorable to our listeners. Our advantage is that we are in real time and can reflect what is going on in our community from day to day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In Morning Show radio you want to have what’s called ‘benchmark’ bits. Something you do regularly that people set a time to listen for. We have a couple of those daily. One is our War of the Roses feature every day on the :45’s.
The other is a fun contest called $1000 Minute! A listener has a chance to win $1000 in one minutes time by correctly answering ten trivia questions in that minute. They are awarded $10 for every correct answer and if they get all ten correct they win the $1000.
One thing we are really proud of is our yearly program at the holidays called “Christmas Wish”. We raised funds for many local and national charities over the years but really wanted to do something where we could directly affect the lives of our local listeners in our community. Ten years ago we asked our listeners to nominate someone they knew that was in need over the holidays that could use some help. The only rule we had was you cannot nominate yourself. The nominations came pouring in by the hundreds. We got stories of single parents show couldn’t afford food much less Christmas, to stories of elderly that were going to lose their homes, to medical issues that took it’s toll on a families finances. We started fundraising and took care of as many Wishes as we could, wishing we could take care of each and every one. In our tenth year this year, we are happy to report the fundraising has grown throughout the years with donations coming from many of our sponsors and advertisers (which is how we got to know the lovely Rachel from Baron’s Markets)! Each year we are able to help more families than the year before and that is the best feeling ever!
What does success mean to you?
The ability to give back defines success for us. One can make all the money in the world and it will mean nothing unless it’s used for the benefit of others in the community.
