Today we’d like to introduce you to Jakquelynn Soto.
Jakquelynn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up as a dancer and cheerleader, I’ve always loved all things glitter! My favorite part of getting ready for dance recitals and football games was when my mom and sister would put my makeup on and how confident I felt with a bold red lipstick on!
As I got older, I started doing it on my own. and my sister who used to work for MAC at the time taught me some tips and tricks. Into high school, my artistry started getting more attention from my friends. I would do everyone’s makeup for games, special events, and dances. I always had so much fun doing it too.
After high school, I was offered a job at Sephora by my high school cheer captain, who was the manager at the time. Which was pretty neat because I didn’t even personally apply. From there, that’s where I feel that my artistry skills started elevating. Especially when I moved to San Diego. artistry was a whole new ball game in southern California. I’m from a small town in central California, It was all very new to me and I was eager to learn more! Being a lot younger than the elevated artist at Sephora, a lot of them took me under their wing and taught me product knowledge and different techniques. I learned from so many talented artists and really applied what I learned every day.
In 2016, I left Sephora and pursued my own freelancing business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Has it been a smooth road??? uuuhhh… no! And that’s totally ok because I see now that it was all apart of my journey that brought me to where I am today. There are dry seasons in freelance and at times it could be a little tough. In those dry seasons, I get to keep going, keep posting social media content and follow up with former clients or reach out to potential new clients. Staying committed to my vision is key. Not selling out on myself and my dreams. And surrounding myself with friends and people who inspire me and want the best for me as I want the best for them. A positive support system is so important. Along with keeping a positive mindset!
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in weddings and special event makeup. I feel so grateful when someone chooses me to be a part of their special day, whether it be a wedding, a special event, photo shoot, or a talk show, it’s such an honor! The energy is always exciting and fun! And seeing my clients confidence after I’ve completed their makeup brings me so much joy!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck hasn’t really played a huge role in my business. It’s been all about playing a big game! Thinking big, believing in myself and having the confidence to own who I am and my talent. Putting my heart into every client and my best efforts. I feel as long as you lead with your heart, you can never go wrong!
