Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Noble Donovan.
Janelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
ANSHI has a simple mission: to help people feel better. And we are committed to guaranteeing that mission find its way in everything we do and say.
Our roots are at the hospital bedside. My six year old daughter Raegan was hospitalized over 60+ in the last two years. One infection turned into many and she almost died, a few times! Our lives were turned upside down, but in the end, I was just a frantic parent trying to do anything and everything to help my child survive and thrive.
She couldn’t always take anything by mouth which forced me to find other ways to help her feel better. I couldn’t just sit there and watch her suffer. So I began rubbing Raegan with simple, natural ingredients that do amazing things. And ANSHI was born.
Raegan had to endure long periods without food. And that was really hard for me as a mom, instinctually, ‘feeding’ my daughter became a priority, even if she was intubated. I desperately wanted to deliver vital nutrients and extra fat to her body, and that’s what Classic Himalayan Salt was- my carrier and ‘food’ for Raegan as she slept and her body fought its infections.
So I began researching and testing as my daughter’s health issues ebbed and turned in a scary, messy maze of ICU’s around the country. What I discovered was that simple ingredients can be powerful, when you consider the concentration and delivery method.
The rubs I made for Raegan worked well – for fevers, for circulation, for general GI discomfort, and for her weak immune system. I’ve seen first hand how avoiding the GI tract and applying directly to the skin could deliver medicine to areas so much quicker than ingesting. The results just blew my mind- and my best friend Viktoria’s too. So together we decided to name my rubs, and bring them to the world. On the second floor googling business names at Rady Children’s Hospital while Raegan sat a floor above in the ICU healing our company took shape.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We’ve only been in business less than a year. Like any small business we face challenges, but particularly for us, we are birthing this company and business out of trauma. With trauma comes baggage.
We can’t go to a traditional bank for a loan because of my personal financial troubles stemming from lots of hospitalizations around the country for Raegan. So funding is a constant priority and challenge- liquidity is king.
Besides that, connecting our product with people in need, seeing the passion for the line come from early adopters and fans- it’s just all so magical! We are staying rooted and building the business out of San Diego, so we focused a lot this year on just getting a core retail footprint locally and are starting to expand across the state.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about ANSHI. What should we know?
ANSHI is natural medicine that you topically apply instead of ingesting. 71% of Americans embrace natural medicine. But the problem is 74% suffer from digestive issues impacting the absorption and effectiveness of whatever we take. It did for my kid.
What people don’t realize is everything from localized pain and swelling to bloating can be treated via your skin – ANSHI is coming to market at a time where people want to be empowered to treat more things naturally and on their own. Being less than six ingredients, all-natural, simple to understand and multipurpose – checks a lot of boxes for growing savvy consumers in health and wellness and beyond.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Raegan’s one infection turning into many was bad luck. But without her unique and long healing journey, ANSHI would not be here today. So in a sense, making something wonderful out of tragedy and bad luck is what ANSHI is all about as a company and brand. The belief in all abilities, in the power of the human body to heal, those are the basic values that drive us day in and day out.
