Meet January Newland of January Wellness in Central San Diego,

Today we’d like to introduce you to January Newland.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I studied Exercise Science & Kinesiology in college, so I knew early on that I had a passion for the human body and health. It’s been a long road from there through lots of unique modalities, teachers & experiences to becoming the unconventional fitness trainer / nutritionist / yoga instructor I am today… I like to call myself a “Whole-Life Wellness Practitioner” because to me, living your best & healthiest life includes so many things beyond diet & exercise.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
They say “smooth sailing never made a skilled sailor” which makes me grateful for the struggles I’ve gone through along the way! In fact, I think most of the concepts and ideas that I teach now, I had to really go through those lessons myself. I had an obsessive fitness stage, for example, where I worked out 2-3 times a day in a struggle to burn calories and achieve this unattainable body ideal I had in my head. I ended up frying my endocrine system, & giving myself several injuries that forced me to slow down. In the end it taught me a lot about how the body really works when led by intuition instead of competition and the blind “no pain, no gain” mentality. In 2008 I started teaching yoga, which was a key component to learning and teaching more mindfulness in everyday life. I dove deep into nutrition studies at the same time because I realized I had been completely focused on movement, and neglecting how that movement is actually FUELED. From there it’s been a lot of fine tuning in my own life and continuous work to create these tweaks that can really lead to a healthful, joyful life! It’s ongoing, of course, but that’s the fun part!

January Wellness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I created January Wellness initially as an online resource for my training clients to gain access to nutritious recipes, and healthy living tips to create a more balanced life. But I also work with many clients 1-on-1 in creating personalized, whole-life wellness upgrades. I specialize in helping people ditch the “diet & punishment” mentality so commonly out there in the fitness world, and instead find a more relaxed & nourishing relationship to food & fitness.

My current passion is leading Thermal Conditioning workshops at our new project called the Cold Sweat Club. We use heated sauna sessions, ice baths, and focused breathwork to create an intense and amazing experience like nothing else… you’ll feel like you just did the hardest workout of your life yet be simultaneously 100% relaxed!

My Sugar Detox program is where most people get started – it’s a two week reset that will not only change your palate and help you kick your cravings, but will also teach you in-depth about sourcing the world’s most nutrient dense foods for radiant health. I personally coach every Sugar Detox group and I’m so proud of how life changing it’s been for so many of my Alumni.

Every year I take a group of adventurers to a remote spot in the Fiji Islands for a fitness & wellness retreat, and it’s one of the things I look most forward to. It’s truly a magical spot that has become like a second home to us, and it’s the perfect opportunity to slow down, get off the beaten path, and into this tranquil, connected culture. We do a once-a-day fusion workout (yoga/strength/breathwork), stand-up-paddling, hiking – but balance that out with lots of relaxation in the warm South Pacific sunshine.

What sets me apart is my comprehensive approach to healthy living; I think how you sleep and poop is just as important as how you dead-lift or sprint. I believe going barefoot, making laughing a priority, and eating the really good grass-fed ice cream once in a while. I believe your best life involves feeding your soul as well as your body.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s anytime someone checks in after a session or a Sugar Detox and tells me that they are forever changed. More than a few Sugar Detox Alumni have reported drastic reductions in their previous chronic illness symptoms, and many have reduced or gone completely off of medications (under doctor supervision, of course). Being able to be a part of changing the game for people’s health every day is over and over again, my proudest moment.
