Meet Jasmine L. Sadler of The STEAM Collaborative in Southeastern San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine L. Sadler.

Jasmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
A daughter of two computer specialists, I was born in Detroit, Michigan. I tutored my classmates in Algebra and became a technically trained competitive dancer. Just before submitting college applications, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster inspired me to pursue Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan. I moved to San Diego seven years ago to work as a Design, Test, and Quality Engineer to turn air into energy. During my MBA program at Point Loma Nazarene University, I re-launched The STEAM Collaborative. My goal as CEO and Visionary for the past five years is to promote STEM from an artistic perspective.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t always been smooth for me. There are still so many gaps in regards to women and African American people in STEM. As my engineering career has continued to blossom, the race for diversity and inclusion continues to grow. At my last job, I was the only woman engineer and the only African American engineer. It has been a passion and a primary point of connection for me to see an increase of people who look like me in engineering. My little brothers and sisters in engineering are a constant motivation as I guide them through career progression.

Tell us more about your company.
My company, The STEAM Collaborative is known for exponentially increasing equity in education. The inaugural STEAM Leaders Summit invited community stakeholders to innovate by developing a collaborative vision statement, to build a one-minute pitch for corporate partnerships, and to align programming with sustainable career pathways. The Summit has also been hosted in Hawaii with a plan to tour around the world. Instead of traditional STEAM programming that may impact 20 children at a time, The STEAM Collaborative focuses on building the adult program leaders. This strategy exponentially impacts children (20 children x 20 programs), especially in underserved communities.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next five to ten years, I see the STEM industry launching more startup companies that can improve many of our world problems. There are completely new opportunities that the Digital Revolution has created that only STEM experts can solve. Ideally, with the efforts that I am doing, there will be a much more diverse and inclusive working environment. This will allow people to feel culturally represented and comfortable in the workplace. I also desire that there are different learning techniques that embed STEAM into the school curriculum.
