Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Bennett.
Jason started his Professional surfing career at age 18. Mid- pro surfing career Jason sparked an interest for shaping his own boards. He was inspired by local surfer/shapers- Wally Puha, Scott Raisbeck, David Barr and Michael Baron. Under the shaping wing of Baron, the two collaborated to start Chemistry Surfboards in 2002, focusing on custom hand shaped surfboards. Currently, Jason runs the company with co-owner and friend, Willie Smith, priding themselves on a more progressive and creative path in the surfboard industry.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road running a small business in America. We constantly struggle with surfboard brands bringing in overseas imports from Countries like China and Vietnam at a cheaper cost than we can manufacture them for.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We make a custom handmade product that is 100 percent American built. I specialize in shaping and designing surfboards. With low profit margins, we’re proud to sustain for the last 16 years through difficult economic times and also emerge as one of the best surfboards in the world. Unlike other brands in our industry everybody that works at Chemistry surfs and loves to build a product that they enjoy riding themselves.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The Oceanside board building committee has played a major role in the development of our product. Where located in a surfboard manufacturing hub of talented craftsmen. On day to day business, we share and build on ideas that help with progression of the brand. Also, our customers giving positive feedback and pure stoked from our boards keeps us going and reminds us why we got into this business.
