Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Erum.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jason. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Photography has always been a passion of mine and I got a chance to really delve into it when I got my first DSLR camera in 2010 after winning a few hundred at Barona Casino. At the time, I did not have a clue on how to use all the manual settings, but I was receiving a lot of compliments on my compositions. I was approached by a friend to take her college graduation photos and I felt surprised, valued and honored to think that someone would want and trust in my skills and art. Throughout the years, I was able to hone my skills. Working at the San Diego Zoo with Sharpshooter Imaging/Magic Memories taking photos of zoo guests, I was able to learn so much more about photography from the work that I did and from the other photographers I worked with. Since then, I have been asked to do photos for families, engagements, events, portraits and for local businesses, such as Frost Me Gourmet Cupcakes.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a frustratingly fun creative journey. There have been times where I doubt my skills and at times the equipment I work with. Like many artists, there has been constant creative blocks and moments where I felt like I had to clearly define my specific niche in photography. At times, I felt like I did not have the best gear compared to other photographers I know, but that never stopped me from being able to get work done. I am in need of an upgrade on a new camera, which will definitely come soon!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jason Erum Photography – what should we know?
I focus on portrait photography and architectural photography. I really love showcasing San Diego and using that as part of a subject in my photos as well to really have my city stand out. I’ve been able to do a variety of shoots so far and it was a proud moment to see my photos from Frost Me Gourmet Cupcakes stand out and be displayed at the UTC Westfield mall when they had a shop there.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Without a doubt, none of this would have been possible without the continued support from my friends and family. For the longest time and maybe until this day, I have been too hard on myself in launching my photography even further. I have been the harshest critic with what I do and the big driving force are all the people that continue to support me. Fellow photographers – Matt Davis (@matthew_j_davis) and Chris Rios (@christopher_rios_photography) – may not know it, but they have definitely taught me so much. My dear friend, Joann, she became the first of many clients who supported and trusted me to snap their photos. Rylee, he always believed in my craft, my art and skills and thankfully has always been up for a shoot. A big thank you to all of you who still have been able to stick around and love what I do.
