Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay alders.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in the ‘burbs of the Jersey Shore, about 15 minutes from the beach. I spent most of my youth either on a skateboard, BMX bike or drawing. I always took to activities without a uniform or rules. I liked activities that let me progress at my own pace.
When I got wheels at 17, the beach became my home away from home and that’s when I picked up surfing and snowboarding.
I have worked for myself since I was a kid. I had side hustles all throughout my childhood and as an adult as well., I’ve started several businesses, some of which flopped and others have done quite well. Eventually, this led me to pursue my fine art professionally which remains my main career focus still.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m most recognized for my surf and ocean-inspired artwork and the elongated figures and trippy imagery in my paintings. My style and the niche I fit into both sort of found me while I just was focusing on painting what felt right to me. I am fascinated by surf culture, nature and beautiful women and so, I paint what inspires me. I focus on painting things that cannot be photographed. I aim to create a new paradigm and offer a new perspective of how to see the world. I hope that my work connects with people in a way where they sense the passion and love that I put into each piece. My art and surfing for that matter connects me to a state of flow and if some of that feeling is captured and translated through paint, then I’ve done my job nobly.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success is doing what you love. If you can make a living doing what you love, even better, but even if you can’t, do it anyway.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen on my site, JayAlders.com as well as all the social media platforms under @JayAlders. My work has been featured on magazine covers, TV and on album covers, most recently on Slightly Stupid’s newest release, “Everyday Life, Everyday People”.
