Meet Jazzie Day

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazzie Day.

Jazzie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Initially, I studied business management with the hope to gain some entrepreneurial knowledge. However, in my second year of college, I lost my sense of purpose and saw no value in continuing school. I knew that my true interests were in the beauty field. So, after receiving some encouragement from a professor to pursue those interests, I decided to drop out and schedule an orientation at Paul Mitchell Beauty School. However, I was heartbroken because I couldn’t afford the tuition, even with the help of financial aid. After some months, I decided to move to San Diego with a friend I’d known since middle school. Immediately, I found work working part-time at Panera Bread and waitressing in Scripps Ranch.

It was then during a shift at Panera that a coworker mentioned the beauty program at San Diego City College. Me being me, I decided to attend an orientation that following Friday so I could check it out for myself. It was an 11 am orientation, and I remember touring the building of the esthetician program and feeling the confirmation of my future career in esthetics. This was my chance to grasp the opportunity of affordable schooling and I wasn’t going to let this pass by, by any means. From that moment on, I never looked back. I knew it was meant for me because before I knew it, I was graduating from the program. Along with receiving my Esthetics license, I became a certified Lash Artist. The determination and persistence to pursue my interests led to who and where I am today, in 2020, where I’m more than a year in my business and happier than ever.

Has it been a smooth road?
With running your own business, the road can be bumpy. Nevertheless, the ride is rewarding. When working for yourself, it’s literally you working for you. Everything that I do and don’t do for my business has an effect. For example, I’ve learned to established boundaries with my friends and family who are also clients because it became clear to me that there are professional and relational benefits to keeping personal and business matters separate. The rewarding part of this ride has been my growth in not only establishing professional boundaries, but also in learning to be more disciplined in managing my business’ finances, scheduling, and marketing.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Jazzie Day is literally me. It encompasses the unique and genuine vibe you get from me, both personally and professionally. My business thrives off my name and who I am because my personality, combined with the best interest in my clients’ needs, propels me to where first-time clients have the desire to return. I provide a variety of services as an esthetician. However, I enjoy waxing and lashing the most. When providing services to clients, I like to include an educational aspect to be transparent about the benefits and/or risks of the services they desire, especially if what they desire compromises their skin or wellbeing of their natural lashes.

There have been many times where my clients want something they’ve seen online and I’d have to express my concerns and inform them that I would refuse the service if they’d want something done that is potentially harmful. It’s out of love for my clients and because I care, and fortunately, I haven’t had to refuse any services to my clients because they tend to respect and trust my professional opinion. I’m proud that I’ve been able to establish that level of respect and trust with my clients because although some of my clients are older, they acknowledge what they’ve learned and continue to engage in open conversations about personal concerns they may have with their skin and or lashes.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The beauty industry is forever changing and in regards to the future, I would love to see more women of color providing services within the industry. Within the next 5 to 10 years, I plan to open up my very own spa and, from there, have multiple locations. I also plan to help novice business owners establish their business through sharing my experiences and knowledge so that it’s possibly one less hurdle they have to get over alone. I am very appreciative of the support and guidance I’ve received from fellow business owners and I feel that it is only right to continue passing down the blessings of knowledge and opportunity to the upcoming generations of entrepreneurs.
