Meet Jeanette Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanette Brown.

Jeanette, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I was always someone who was very creative and I always had small projects I would be working on whether it be painting and doing arts and crafts or writing. The arts were always an outlet for me and coming from humble beginnings, I would use my talents when it came to gifting. I wouldn’t always have the money to get nice gifts for family members and friends so I would paint them pictures, craft and personalize a card, or even create jewelry for them on holidays and birthdays. I always felt like those types of gifts were my favorite since they were more sentimental and from the heart. In recent years, I started making jewelry for fun and I would wear pieces I created and post about them on social media. As a result, I started having friends and family reach out to me asking if I could create pieces for them as well. From the positive feedback I was getting, I decided to start selling my pieces online and that is when I started my Etsy shop as well as my Instagram business profile. The Etsy shop was a good business move as I was able to reach a bigger audience.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The main struggle I have is just trying to find the time to focus on my small business. I love making my pieces but I am a full-time teacher so sometimes I have to take breaks from my jewelry making process because I just don’t have the time. In the future, I would want to find more ways to market my jewelry as well as find local storefronts to sell my jewelry.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is known for handmade jewelry. When I first started, I was creating lots of origami as well as ceramic and glass bead earrings but I take commissions as well and will work with a customer if they have a particular idea in mind. Recently, I have also been dabbling in creating pieces with lightweight clay. As a business, I feel like I am most proud of being able to work with my customers to create pieces that they love. I love giving my customers choices and I like them to be involved in the jewelry making process.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as being fulfilled in whatever you are pursuing. I think a lot of people equate success to money but I think that if you are happy and bring happiness to others then you are successful.

Pricing:

  • All my pieces are generally anywhere between $15-30 price range. I like to keep my prices affordable and reasonable.
