Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Hutzler.
Hi Jeff, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started teaching and coaching in tiny Indian Springs, NV right after graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1983. Earned my MEd in physical education in 2000 and accepted position of director of athletics and physical education and head football coach at La Jolla Country Day School in 2001.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Both a challenge and a blessing, I jumped right into it at a relatively young age. i was a head football and men’s and women’s track and field coach and JV men’s basketball coach at 23 years of age. I sort of learned by trial and error and I learned a lot.
As you know, we’re big fans of La Jolla Country Day School. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’ve been extremely fortunate to be at La Jolla Country Day School for the past 24 years. LJCDS is a school that values bringing out the best as a scholar, artists and athlete in every student. There is no “typical” LJCDS student except that our students are very involved in the life of the school. LJCDS does not pigeon hole students into one lane but encourages and facilitates them being multidimensional, trying new things and taking chances. It’s all about “reaching and teaching” young people through whatever methods and activities work best for each student.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
A strong work ethic combined with a set of core values that are good/rewarding for students.
