Meet Jeffrey Jones of The Deerborne Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Jones.

Hi Jeffrey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey has been anything but traditional. I started my career serving as a U.S. Navy SEAL in Coronado, where I learned discipline, planning, and execution under the most demanding circumstances imaginable. Those years taught me resilience, teamwork, and the importance of preparation—qualities that would serve me throughout my professional life.

After transitioning out of the military, I entered the life sciences industry and spent more than 30 years in the global genomics and precision diagnostics space. I have held senior leadership roles at Fortune 500 companies, venture-backed startups, and mid-stage diagnostic labs. Along the way, I helped launch innovative technologies, navigated acquisitions, and built commercial organizations that brought cutting-edge tests to patients around the world.

In 2020, I founded The Deerborne Group, a boutique management consultancy based in San Diego. My vision was to create a firm that could offer the depth of expertise of a large consultancy but with the agility, focus, and personal attention of a boutique practice. Since then, we’ve partnered with Fortune 500 corporations, venture capital firms, and startups, helping them identify opportunities, minimize risks, and accelerate the development and commercialization of promising diagnostic solutions.

Looking back, what connects each chapter of my story is a commitment to making an impact—whether through service, innovation, or mentorship. Today, I continue to draw on those early lessons from my time as a SEAL, combining them with decades of industry experience, to help companies transform ideas into lasting value.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my earliest challenges came when I went back to college after serving on active duty and while still in the Navy SEAL Reserves. I enrolled at UCLA, and balancing the demands of military service with a full academic load required discipline and careful time management. I was a little older than most of my classmates, which meant I approached school with a different level of focus and urgency.

What made the journey easier was the support of my wife, Holly. We met while I was in the Navy—she was just 19 at the time—and we dated all through my service, including two overseas deployments. After college, we married, and her encouragement made the challenges along the way much easier to face. Our faith was also a constant source of strength, giving us perspective and grounding us during the most demanding times.

Later in my career, the obstacles shifted. The diagnostics industry is highly competitive and heavily regulated, and bringing innovative technologies to market often meant navigating complex approval pathways, limited resources, and the uncertainty of startup life. There were times when acquisitions reshaped everything overnight, and others where years of effort didn’t yield the results we expected.

Even founding The Deerborne Group came with its own hurdles. Launching a consultancy during the pandemic meant dealing with economic uncertainty, shifting client priorities, and the pressure of building something sustainable from the ground up.

Looking back, these challenges—whether in school, in the Navy, or in business—shaped my resilience. But more importantly, they reminded me that no one succeeds entirely on their own. Having Holly by my side, and leaning on our faith, made the hardest times easier and the victories even sweeter.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Deerborne Group?
The Deerborne Group is a boutique management consultancy that I founded in 2020 in San Diego. We specialize in genomics and precision diagnostics, helping companies—from Fortune 500 corporations to startups—navigate some of the most complex challenges in healthcare and life sciences. Our work ranges from commercialization strategy and market access to operations and corporate strategy.

What sets us apart is that we’re not a large, generalist firm. We’re a network of industry experts with decades of first-hand experience building diagnostics businesses ourselves. That means our clients aren’t just getting advice from a slide deck—they’re getting practical, battle-tested insights from people who have been in their shoes. We’re proud that leading corporations, venture capital, and private equity firms trust us to help identify opportunities, reduce risks, and accelerate the development and launch of new diagnostic solutions.

A big part of what drives our success is leadership philosophy. I’ve always believed in a servant-leadership style—putting clients, colleagues, and partners first. For me, leadership isn’t about telling people what to do; it’s about listening, empowering others, and helping them achieve their goals. That mindset has shaped how The Deerborne Group works with clients and how we’ve built long-term relationships rooted in trust and collaboration.

From a brand perspective, I’m most proud of how quickly The Deerborne Group has become recognized as a trusted advisor in our field. We’ve been featured in leading industry publications such as GenomeWeb and 360Dx, consistently rank highly in online search for diagnostics consulting, and have also been recognized multiple years as one of San Diego’s top management consulting firms. Our slogan, “Imagine More. Together.” reflects our belief that the best solutions come when science, business, and strategy intersect—and when people work side by side to make innovation real.

At the end of the day, I want readers to know that The Deerborne Group exists to help transform promising science into meaningful healthcare solutions. We bring clarity, strategy, and execution to companies working on the frontlines of innovation, and it’s incredibly rewarding to play even a small role in advancing the future of medicine.

What’s next?
Looking ahead, my focus is on continuing to grow The Deerborne Group’s impact in the genomics and precision diagnostics space. The science is advancing at an incredible pace, and there’s a real need for specialized advisors who can help companies translate innovation into solutions that reach patients. We plan to keep expanding our global network of experts, deepening our partnerships with Fortune 500s, venture-backed startups, and investors, and building on the reputation we’ve established as a trusted boutique consultancy.

Beyond The Deerborne Group, I’m also deeply involved in advancing next-generation oncology diagnostics. The future of cancer care will rely on technologies like liquid biopsy and comprehensive genomic profiling, and I’m excited to help shape that transformation—both through my consulting work and through new ventures I’m leading.

Most importantly, though, I’m looking forward to time with my family. My wife Holly and I have two daughters and two grandchildren, and being with them brings me more joy than anything else. Our faith is also central to our lives—it’s been an anchor through both the challenges and the victories, and it continues to guide the way we live and lead. As much as I’m excited about the future of science and business, I know the true measure of success is building a life where professional purpose, faith, and family love go hand in hand.
