Meet Jeffrey Steorts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Steorts.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jeffrey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In high school, I excelled at two things: creative writing and wood-shop. Early on I was creating non-traditional pieces of woodworking like carving airplane propellers and wooden dinosaurs. Then around the age of 24, I began the practice of meditation because I took a keen interest in the study of yoga and the eastern approach to spirituality.

As a result of my meditation practice, it felt to me as if my creativity was being in a sense repurposed and turned in the different direction of expression. I became intrigued with finding and repurposing found objects that could be combined with my woodworking skills. Also, I had always loved mechanical things, in particular, clock and watch parts. These elements quickly became a way to symbolize and represent the timeless soul within us.

This, coupled with my interest in medieval architecture and related things, my work quite often ends up looking like horological alter pieces. Poetry became a voice that I include within these reliquaries and structures that have a distinctly historical feeling.

The poetry usually centers around the idea of spiritual aspirations and the finding of this divine treasure that waits within us to be revealed.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My path down this avenue of expression has felt effortless in the sense that the inspiration is always there. However, given my process things take time and the work itself can be tedious. Inspiration itself constantly needs the support of perspiration and concentration. When I show up and do my work these 3 things come together and the outcome is almost always something that delights me, and my inner creative child gets fed.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I create in my free time as it is not currently a means of income for me at this time. As I proceed, my dream is to find a way to do this work full time and also do more commission work for individuals seeking one of a kind works of art that reflect uniqueness and imagination.

In this digital and automated age we live in, I specialize in creating with my hands and my heart to manifest work that is reminiscent of a magical past, yet conveying a message that reminds us of the spiritual flame that is ever-present within. Currently, my work can be seen at the automotive museum in Balboa Park.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
One way I would define success is being able to manifest the dreams and aspirations in our hearts and minds that seek expression, and profit from them materially and spiritually. When we can share our talents and capacity with the world around us I believe we are able to expand ourselves.
