Meet Jennifer Burton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Burton.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I credit my grandmother for nurturing my creative side in my formative years. She always had art supplies readily available, and my passion for art started there. Being a shy, sensitive kid, I found it easier to express myself through drawing or painting. As an angsty, depressed teen I used as many creative outlets as possible, from fashion to fine art, theatre to dance. I saw it as a means of survival. These days my visual art is less about surviving difficult experiences and more about play and getting in a meditative “zone.”

Please tell us about your art.
I paint with acrylics, often working on two or more pieces per session. I do a lot of portraits, flowers, and abstracts. Color and composition play a huge part in my inspiration. Sometimes I see beautiful compositions in photographs and want to recreate that beauty in a new way. As far as the why— I think that changes from piece to piece. Often I’m just chasing my curiosity about beauty, technique or style. I notice that the older I get, the more I crave lightheartedness in my process. Now that I think of it, even the pieces I love the most have a light quality about them. What I hope people get from my work is a sense of peace, joy, or understanding. A sense that they are not alone and that, even if in just this instance, there’s a sameness about us.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Go to art events. Just show up repeatedly, and you’re bound to make art friends! Also, hosting art nights is always a fun way to connect with fellow artists or those curious about art.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have artwork for sale at Fiji Yogurt in Hillcrest as well as in my Etsy shop. People can support my work there or on my Instagram.
