Meet Jennifer Tarzia of CBI Healthcare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Tarzia.

Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to San Diego from the small town of Camino, CA to attend college and major in International Business.

During my Junior year, my uncle who suffered from alcoholism most of his adult life passed away from the disease. I had spent a lot of time taking my uncle to his therapy appointments and was an integral part of his treatment process. My entire family was riddled with addiction and mental illness, so it only made sense to get a degree in Psychology. I started working in the behavioral health field in my Senior year of college at Hanbleceya San Diego.

I spent five years working my way up the ladder and was invited to be a part of the opening team of they’re first ever satellite facility in Seattle. After a year and a half away from San Diego I returned with the wonderful experience of opening a treatment center from the ground up. It was at this time I began work in the intervention field with an old colleague who had started his own business. Since both of our backgrounds were working with the chronically mentally ill, we quickly created a new model of conducting interventions that were not common practice.

It was in this work that got to put my graduate degree in Counseling Psychology to the test, creating a family program and coaching families through some of the most challenging times in their life. A little over a year ago I became the Chief Operating Officer of CBI, a team of 5 clinicians who work with clients and families globally to obtain health and wellness. Additionally, we now speak at a conference about our unique inclusive intervention model that aims at understanding an individual through the lens of trauma/attachment and family systems.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In some ways it has been a smooth road because I have never doubted that I am in the right profession, doing the work I am meant to be. With that said, as a female interventionist in a male-dominated career has certainly brought on its unique challenges. Additionally, the struggling ethics of our industry and the profession of being an interventionist is something I deal with every day.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the CBI Healthcare story. Tell us more about the business.
CBI is unique primarily because we are a group of specialist. Each of us has a degree or credential in our area of expertise, for me, being a trained Marriage Family Therapist, for example, gives me the training and expertise to work with families and the complexities that can add to an individual getting better. Additionally, we have an addiction specialist on the team, an eating disorder specialist and a relationship trauma specialist.

With every case, we begin with a consultation/assessment process where we are gathering information that is used to create a plan specific to the families needs (You don’t see this normally from other interventionists). This process allows for us to ensure we are not missing key pieces of a person’s history (mental health issues, trauma, partner violence, etc) that would either get in the way of our intervention or eventually someone’s recovery.

We work primarily with complex cases that include chronic mental health issues (schizophrenia/bipolar), relationship trauma (sex trafficking/domestic violence) and addiction (all forms). I am most proud of my staff, we are all bringing a unique set of talents to the table, provide invaluable support to one another when we are out in the field and at the end of the day show up from a place of love. All we want is to do no harm and help people achieve health and wellness.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck.. hmm.. I don’t believe in luck. I believe that the universe has our back and we see things fall into place effortlessly when we are in alignment with our gifts. When I am experiencing difficulties or challenges I ask myself, “What are you doing that is not of your highest self? What do you need to change about this situation so there is ease?”
