Meet Jenny Williams of Jennywennycakes in Carmel Mountain Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Williams.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always loved to bake, but after quite a while working in the lab for the pharmaceutical industry, I was looking for a creative outlet, I started to bake treats and cakes to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. That turned into a passion, and I got my certificate of the Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry at Grossmont College.

Jennywennycakes started officially in 2010 in a shared rental space and we were lucky enough to find the perfect little bakery location in Carmel Mountain Ranch, a little off the beaten track so we can just offer custom creations to order.

We have continued to grow and improve our skills and are still proud to say that we make sure our cakes and desserts taste as good as they look! We use the best ingredients and bake our cakes from scratch.

We now have 3 employees, Holly, Britanny and Alvin who all have a multitude of talents and work together to make your dreams come true in dessert and cake form!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always bumps along the way, our biggest challenge always continues to be to charge enough for the very detailed work we do and educate our customers to see how hard we work and that we can’t reduce our prices any lower.

As a small business owner, it’s always difficult to switch off and try to take time for myself that will be a 2018 goal!

Jennywennycakes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Jennywennycakes is well known for making some of the most delicious cakes in town for weddings, birthdays, baby showers and all kinds of other occasions. We also make lots of scrumptious desserts including macarons, tarts, cookies, trifles and other specialties. I often put a British spin on things, and you’ll find around the holidays we’ll have some special creations from the UK.

I am most proud of how great our customer service is and how hard we work to ensure that everyone feels like we’ve worked with them to make their dreams come true.

That sets us apart from other larger bakeries, as we can really make sure that the experience is unique and that we’re able to create a full service experience, and deliver and set everything up exactly as our customers need, rather than dropping off a few boxes within a several hour window of time.

We bake our cakes from scratch, make our caramels and creams and jams in house, and take pride in using the best ingredients. We use a Swiss meringue buttercream for our cakes, and refuse to compromise in quality ingredients.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We did a huge 8 tiered cake for a 25th anniversary last year, everyone on the team worked together to create a magic experience which we carried out to the guests at the Hard Rock Hotel to lots of ‘wow’s!
