Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Putts.
Devil Dogs BBQ Catering is the result of years of hard work and dedication. Founded in 2013 by Ret. SSgt. Putts, Arkansas native, Jeremy, joined the US Marines right after high school. While in the Marines he was known for his love of cooking and bbq’ing. At the later days of his service, his love of BBQ drove him to participate in the popular BBQ competitions. DDBBQ started as a small team of BBQ competitors with the KCBS. You might remember these competitions from the popular reality TV show series of the time.
As a result of the popularity of the team, in 2014 Devil Dogs BBQ started doing small events at local breweries in North County San Diego, places such as Aztec Brewing Co. But it was not until 2015 when they leased their first food truck. This is also the time when they started to develop their brand. Putts, who served for 20 years and was used to the military lifestyle of service, wanted to continue to serve his Marines and what better way than by feeding them. They went back to Camp Pendleton and began to create a route for gourmet food trucks. Thus, becoming one of the first gourmet food trucks to serve the base.
Nowadays, they continue to support their military community as often as possible. Needless to say, BBQ is their passion, they are proud to say they are now in their own truck and they continue to grow.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Some of the biggest obstacles that we face as a food truck is finding lunch and dinner spots that are profitable. We are always chasing the customer vice the customer coming to us. Plus being a truck owner now, we have the constant upkeep of the truck.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Devil Dogs BBQ – what should we know?
We are a BBQ food truck and catering business. We specialize in true southern BBQ and down-home sides. The vast majority of our foods are made from scratch; from the BBQ sauce, the rubs and we even make our own sausages and bacon.
One of the biggest things that we are known for is not one of our meats, but our spicy Mac-N-Cheese. One of the things that I am most proud of is that we stay true to our roots and not take shortcuts just to try and get more people through the lines. What sets us apart from others is the authenticity of our foods.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Staying true to your beliefs and not giving into what society thinks.
