Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerick Regala.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jerick. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
What’s up! I’m Jay Saffi, and I was born in Long Beach raised in San Diego, I have basically been living everywhere in San Diego from Mira Mesa all the way down to Chula. My younger days were pretty tough living with my mom and my younger sister going house to house, couch to couch, and yeah you know it wasn’t pretty, but I used that as energy to better myself. So… It’s funny the way I actually started rapping. I used to always want to make music with my friends, so I was always singing and rapping, but that wasn’t my main thing. Anyways, long story short I got hurt pretty bad playing basketball, and I couldn’t walk correctly for a whole year. I started focusing on music a lot more around 7th – 8th grade and kept pushing to get performances for school and any outside venue I can get on. Also, I used to sell chips around the school to save money for my music equipment, that was pretty cool. Haha. Fast forward a couple of years later here I am with my own music studio, engineering several artists and making my music. The San Diego music scene has grown so much; you can almost feel it in the air that we’re next on the map!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road at all! Haha. Back in 2016, we used to have a shop with a studio in the back, and we had an in house producer, and everything was boomin! Sadly, gang-related activities happen. Drugs happen, and at that point, some people in the circle just don’t have the same work ethic as others do, and that’s when you draw a line. Anyways you know how that goes. A funny story I can tell you guys before I had enough money for a mic stand and a microphone I used to tape my rock band mic to the top of my vacuum so I can rap standing up hahaha. When you’re hungry for it, you find a way!
Please tell us about Jay Saffi.
So I’m an artist. I rap, sing, and also write. I have a music studio down on Main St. Chula Vista where I engineer other artists whenever they need studio time. One thing that sets me apart from others is my creativity. I’ve learned throughout the years to feel the music, and not just read the music. I stress this a lot to the artist that record at “Saffi Studios” that when you spit something, say what you’re saying with heart and meaning; you want to make every track like it’s your last.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I got a lot of childhood memories, but my favorite memory would be when my grandma would make me some fried eggs, hotdog, and rice, haha, it’s an Asian breakfast thing, and I swear it’s still my go to. Music wise my favorite memory was in middle school with all the rap battles I had, selling stickers and CDs.
