Meet Jerrelle Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerrelle Wilson.

Jerrelle, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
When I first started to practice yoga, a friend of mine in college took me to a studio and didn’t tell me anything about the class. I was 280 pounds and wanted to make a change. I knew that yoga was stretching but had no clue the level of dynamic exercise it would include. I went that first day and signed up for a membership after class. I practiced yoga three-four times a week after that initial class for over a year. I lost 70 pounds and was urged to begin my first teacher training at I AM YOGA Wellness in Turlock, CA. I loved the training it was six months of getting in touch with my authentic self. After the training, I soon moved to San Diego where I started teaching at San Diego Yoga Center. After a few years and teaching at multiple studios, I got the opportunity to do my next training in Indonesia with three of the most amazing and talented teacher’s yoga has to offer. When I came back, I found a fire ignited in me to focus on hand-balancing, mobility, and strength. Making my classes a combination of movement, flexibility, and strength. As a black male yogi who is over 200 pounds, I find it important for me to show my vulnerability but also show that anybody and any personal background/culture can practice yoga.

Can you give our readers some background on your work?
As a yoga instructor, I teach people how to move, how to access depths and flexibility that they personally never thought before. I enjoy helping others rehabilitate. My intention for every student is for them to be able to take flexibility out of the class and into their daily lives.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Yes, as a yoga instructor but also a writer, it is so important for us as artists to think about how we can affect positive change in our culture and neighborhoods. I understand that through yoga, I have access to making sure that when we are making big decisions, we use meditative and ethical principles. That breathing is so important when we feel anxious and rushed. In my classes, I push for my students to understand that the principles we learn on the mat are supposed to be applied daily in our lives.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can follow my Instagram, my website or my Facebook page. They can ask for private classes or group classes. On my Instagram and website, that is where you can find the most information about me and how to start a yoga practice. I will also be posting about upcoming retreats and workshops which are times to get away from the chaos of society and be in the present moment.
