Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Burns.
Jess, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in the Bay Area and raised in Redding, CA (north of Chico). I experienced a lot of misfortune in my young adult life, but I was determined to move on from the tragedies I experienced, and from this place that always seemed to be trapping everyone in it. Due to the lack of local educational resources and career opportunities, my location didn’t really align with my career goals.
I moved on to art school in Sacramento, which was a great experience, but at the suggestion of my sister (Cassandra) I transferred to San Diego to complete my education with her at the Art Institute. I graduated with a Bachelors in Graphic & Web Design, and she followed shortly after with a Bachelors in Web Design & Interactive Media. We began working on projects together, and we were quite the dynamic duo. With my proficiency in design and her knowledge of web, we could do anything together.
A couple of years ago, we decided to create our own family business, and we’ve been working with clients to drive better results for their businesses ever since. We’re digitally-focused, and we’ve worked with clients ranging from multinational corporations and design agencies to small, independent start-ups. We’re a full-service design & marketing agency that covers everything from branding to websites to print materials to social media strategies.
We’ve come to love the city of San Diego, and after 5 years of learning and working and moving around in search of the perfect dog-friendly location, I think we can both safely consider San Diego our home.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think one of the biggest struggles we both face is working with people that have been in business for years, as adults in our late 20’s. It’s easy to look at people our age and assume that we’re young and inexperienced. But fortunately for us, we were among the first of our generation to be raised around technology.
We learned to type MLA-format essays and create Powerpoint presentations by the age of 8, so we have over 20 years of experience with technology, and we were among the first to learn about the social media engines that are now used as reliable resources for consumers.
Another struggle is the ever-changing aspect of our work, meaning that we have to keep up with the latest trends in technology and continue to learn about our evolving crafts as time goes by. Regardless of the struggles we experience, we really do enjoy our work!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Legacy Creative Agency story. Tell us more about the business.
We focus on three main aspects of our business. One of our functions is online marketing. The most effective way to promote your business in today’s marketplace is to utilize social networking, email blasts, apps, websites, and SEO strategies. That’s where we come in.
Another area we focus on is Graphic Design. Whether a business is looking to create a new visual identity or print materials for their brand, it’s our job to ensure that the look and feel of the brand remain consistent and evokes positive reactions from consumers.
Lastly, we focus on Website Design. We use the world’s most current trends in technology to increase the longevity of websites, promote healthy SEO, and attract target audiences.
I think we have a unique approach to web marketing and design, which is something we’re both proud of. We take current trends into consideration, as well as what contributes to the success of a business and try to create something new or something that’s never been done. I think that sets us apart.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We have had a solid case study going for a product called ‘Solscense’ over the last year. We’ve had success in increasing sales from nearly none to 90 per month.
We’d like to continue taking on local clients and improving outcomes for small business owners in the area and make a real difference in San Diego. Our career field will continue to evolve over the next few years, but I believe that a positive presence on the web is going to be pertinent for every business for years to come.
