Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Perkins.
Jesse, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Darren Mahoney was the founder of Sign Age Identity Systems and was operating the business by himself before I came to work for him in 2004. We were doing very small projects but always wanted to grow the business. We found a good niche market with General Contractors, doing public works projects. Darren and I would do the estimating, project management, production and the installation. We didn’t have a lot of equipment so we would sub-out a lot of the signage fabrication. Overtime we grew and added additional employees to assist in specific areas. We invested in equipment so we could manufacture our own signs, control lead times, quality and pricing. The goal was to grow at a sustainable rate without taking on lots of debt.
Our project portfolio included Schools, Libraries, Universities and other municipalities. A major steeping stone in our history is when we were awarded the San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 Expansion. This was our biggest project ever taken on and it really helped us take the next level with our craftsmanship. The high-end signage was difficult to fabricate and the project schedule was tight. We were able to deliver a finished product that we are proud of and met the project requirements.
From there, we have grown into a full-service signage company. We have 30 employees and a 10,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Santee, CA.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles included lots of extra hours to meet project schedules, cash flow and finding the right people to join our team.
Sign Age – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in large commercial signage projects. Airports, Hospitals, Universities, retail shopping centers, and other major municipalities. We also have a small project division to handle the smaller retail type signage projects. We manufacturer all our signage in house and produce many different types of projects.
We are most proud of being able to work at the San Diego International Airport. We have completed 5 major projects there and have more to come. We also were involved with the largest Airline move at LAX where we moved 27 Airlines in 3 nights.
We take pride in every project we do and see it has an opportunity to put our stamp on our community.
