Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessi Frieberg.
Jessi, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story started growing up in a small farming town in Wisconsin. I have always had big dreams of graduating from high school and moving out to California. When I graduated high school I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do for a career but I always knew I loved hair and makeup so I decided to enroll in cosmetology in Madison, Wisconsin. Instantly I knew I had a passion for hair and the industry. Once I graduated I worked for a small salon for three years and decided I wanted more. I found another salon in Madison that was more upscale. I worked there for four years and Honed in my craft for hair coloring and balayage. Still deep down I had the urge that I wanted more and dreamed of California. So literally one day my husband and I talked about it and decided to save every penny we had for six weeks and make the plunge and move to California. I had never visited San Diego but had researched and knew it was going to be my future home. So we packed up everything we could fit in one car and made the trek out.
I worked at a super cute salon in North Park for a year until I got the feeling again I needed more for myself so that’s when I had the idea of opening my salon suite. I had luckily built an amazing clientele within a year of being here so without them I wouldn’t be able to be at my salon today! I have had my suite open for about two months now and I couldn’t be happier being my boss lady. I am excited to see where the future takes me to be my boss!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been so smooth. When we first moved to California we had just enough money to get us by for a few months. I first took a job at what I thought would have been an amazing opportunity for my career at a salon in La Jolla. I soon had figured out it wasn’t the right fit for me. I started freaking out and thought why did we move here? I was comfortable in Wisconsin and I moved our entire life out here. It was a hard transition. So after I left that job I was interviewing like crazy but come to find out a lot of salons don’t like hiring someone from out of town without a clientele. Finally, the salon Salvage in the north park gave me a chance and I cannot thank them enough for the opportunity to grow in San Diego! If it wasn’t for them I’m not sure where I would be today.
Tell us about your business.
My salon is called Wild Moon Hair Studio. I specialize in all things color but mostly Balayage, lived in color techniques, basically color that can be worn for months and still look beautiful when you come back in my chair. I would say I’m most proud and what sets me apart is my customer service. I want everyone who sits in my chair to feel comfortable to be themselves around me. I take pride in my work and make sure everyone leaves feeling amazing and confident!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I would have to say my always positive mindset. No matter how stressful life can be having that positive attitude really takes you far in life!
