Meet Jessie Romero of Thrifty Threads

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Romero.

Hi Jessie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve spent nearly my whole life in North County San Diego. After graduating from San Dieguito Academy, I earned a Bachelor’s in Communication from Cal State San Marcos and began my career in Sales and Marketing, eventually focusing on Field Marketing. I thrived managing logistics and marketing for nationwide tradeshows—but by 2023, burnout had set in, and I was ready for a change.

That shift coincided with my family’s business, Thrifty Threads, transitioning to the next generation. Founded by my grandmother in 1978, Thrifty Threads has long been a local staple. My Aunt Wilma ran it for decades with heart and artisanship, followed by my parents who modernized the space but found themselves wanting to spend more time on the pickleball courts than running a clothing shop allowed.

Looking for something new, I stepped in as Owner and General Manager in summer 2023. With limited fashion experience but strong business acumen, I approached the store with a fresh perspective—applying corporate strategies like goal-setting, performance tracking, and team engagement. It’s been an incredibly rewarding pivot that’s allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, the road has been smooth—though like any business, there have been challenges. From building maintenance issues to staffing hiccups and the occasional shoplifting incident, unexpected problems are part of the territory and adaptability is key.

Being a family-run business, I’m grateful to have a strong support system. My parents and brother live nearby and are always willing to pitch in. I’ve also leaned on a network of experienced mentors—local business owners, former managers, and friends—who’ve generously shared their insight on everything from personnel management to navigating new responsibilities. Their guidance has been invaluable.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Thrifty Threads is a locally owned resale shop that’s been part of the Encinitas community for over 40 years, spanning three generations. We’ve stayed true to the vision my grandmother had in the ‘70s—a place to find great beachwear, trendy styles, and classic staples at unbeatable prices.

What sets us apart is our simple “cash for clothes” model. Instead of consignment or donations, we pay sellers on the spot. It’s fast, simple, and community-friendly. We offer a buyer’s guide for first-time sellers and pride ourselves on creating a welcoming, no-pressure environment. Being in the heart of Encinitas, we reflect the laid-back, surf-and-skate culture that defines our town.

Shopping at Thrifty Threads, you’ll find hand curated pieces —whether it’s vintage Levi’s, graphic tees, or coastal casual wear—while supporting sustainability in the fashion industry by giving clothes a second life and reducing textile waste. Above all, we’re proud to be a trusted local resource for recycled fashion and accessible style.

What makes you happy?
The list of happy blessings in my life is long and fruitful and brings a smile to my face as I share…

– Shop dog Charly
– The beach
– Sunny days with friends and family
– A bean and cheese burrito
– A turkey sandwich with avocado
– Ice cream
– A skinny margarita
– A San Diego Padres home game
– Weekends in Baja
– Locals who stop into Thrifty Threads when they’re back visiting home
– The amazing staff who keep the shop running with good vibes every day

They’re little reminders of how good life is when you’re rooted in a community you love. For me, it’s one where I cherish the people, the rhythm of life, and the chance to be part of something meaningful.
