Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Taft.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always been a creative person, I had just never known what to do with it. I was always drawing, wanting to be a tattoo artist, painter, or author. It wasn’t until my last year of high school that I picked up a camera. With my mom’s older Canon DSLR (I’m personally a Nikon fan now) I took hundreds of photos of our cats, dogs, or anything that moved. I started to take photos of my friends, and slowly with lots of trial and error, it snowballed into a small business that I now do full-time. Without my mom pushing and supporting me with this, (and loaning me her camera) I don’t think I would have thought twice about photography. I fell in love with the creativity, the community, and all the wonderful connections you build during every session. There’s nothing like leaving after a photo session with someone new you can call your friend.
Please tell us about your art.
I describe my photography style as ‘bold, colorful and classic’. My goal is to capture candid, real moments with every couple and family I meet. I want to capture exactly how you were, and real emotions, in a creative, colorful and authentic way, because that is how I believe photos were meant to be.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My biggest advice is to never compare yourself to others, only to be motivated by others. My biggest struggle when starting this journey, and even now, is the comparison. I try and keep in mind that we are all different, and unique, and our art shows that, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I wish I had realized what a creatively hindering thing comparison is.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I use social media platforms to show my work. Instagram and Facebook, and also through my website.
