Jillian Cardona is the founder of <i>Radiate Confidence Contracts</i>. <i>Radiate Confidence Contracts</i> is a simple and easy-to-use platform that gives business owners on-demand access to lawyer-reviewed contracts, documents, and video courses providing solutions for their businesses. Jillian has been interested and involved in growing businesses since college and has been an entrepreneur for her entire professional career. Jillian worked as a designer for over ten years – assisting tech and software companies with user experience, website, and visual design. Throughout law school and after graduating, Jillian worked for a business law firm that focused on commercial transactions. She took a step back from professional life to focus on raising and spending time with her young children.
Now that her kids are school-aged, Jillian has stepped back into professional life and brought her past professional experience and recent life experience to inspire and energize the business she has built, an on-demand business resource platform that provides business owners with the contracts and legal business solutions they need to run their businesses smoothly and efficiently. Jillian started <i>Radiate Confidence Contracts</i> as a tool to help other business owners be successful. The concept for <i>Radiate</i> came to Jillian in the classic way that many of our best ideas come to us – like a lightbulb turning on while in the shower. Jillian had started and was building her own business after being a stay-at-home mom for over five years with her two kids. Jillian notes that , “Having children was a very transformational experience for me. Everything changed once I had kids. My priorities changed, I was practically a different person than before I had kids. My youngest was going to start preschool in the Fall, and I realized I would once again have time to focus on work for the first time in years. But again, EVERYTHING was different after having kids. I knew I wanted to take my new perspective into what I focused on for my next business. It took a lot of meditation, reflection, and soul searching to land on what I wanted to do in this next phase of life. I knew I wanted to create something that helped people be more efficient and more effective.”
Jillian was building her estate planning law firm from scratch; building a new business from the ground up – again. “Thankfully I’d had the experience of building and selling several businesses for myself and with others. Those successes and mistakes helped guide me past some of the pitfalls common to starting and building a business.” Before having kids, Jillian worked in the tech and business law industries. “It was exciting and interesting work, but the reality is that it is quite challenging to successfully build a business AND be a hands-on parent. After having kids I realized that I couldn’t – and didn’t want – to jump back into the grind of tech industry. So, I had to find something that would offer more balance, less stress, and give me flexibility with time. So, I opened my estate planning law practice.” Jillian is the owner and lead attorney at <i>Peace of Mind Planning</i> (https://peaceofmindplanning.co) – a boutique estate planning law firm with offices in San Diego and Santa Barbara, California. “Estate planning gave me the flexibility to pick my kids up from preschool at noon and still have the bandwidth to parent the way I wanted to. I approached everything with a mindset of efficiency and creating sustainable processes to deliver high quality work for my clients.”
So how did this estate planning attorney end up building a business resource and contracts platform for other business owners to use? Jillian quickly learned that the other women-business owners were facing a lot of the same obstacles that she had overcome when starting and building her business. “I started to attend women-focused networking events to promote my estate planning business. After having children, many new parents struggle with the reality of returning to a 9-to-5 corporate job schedule. It can be difficult to trade the majority of your days and weeks away, knowing that could be time spent with your kids. Especially for mothers of young children, there often exists the dream of running their own business that could give them the income they need and the flexibility and control over their time that they desire. But entrepreneurship and running your own business can be a challenging, lonely, and isolating experience. It can feel intimidating having to “go it alone”. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes and no. My past experiences has given me the knowledge and confidence to tackle everything that goes into starting and running my business, but there will always be challenging parts of running your business. It has not always been a smooth road – and I try to keep in mind that many of the best things in life are not always a smooth road. However, there are some aspects of building a business that can be simplified. A big part of the value of working with an experienced business lawyer is that they have seen many iterations of successful and unsuccessful businesses. You’re paying for that experience and knowledge when you work with a business lawyer – so that you can hopefully avoid as many mistakes as possible and streamline some of the components of starting and operating your business.
Some of the struggles along the way are that laws change. Sometimes you have to reevaluate a past solution that you’ve been using and update your process. Another struggle is that business owners often have to operate in less than certain territory. When that happens, it can be a struggle to collect the best information, engage in decision and risk analysis, and then move forward with the best decision you can make at that time with the information that you have.
