Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Wu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jimmy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always loved photos since I was young, but since my family couldn’t afford the cost of photography equipment and film I wasn’t able to pursue photography until I grew older. I studied computer science in school and became a software engineer. While working in software, I remembered back to my love for photography and picked up my first DSLR camera. Since then I taught myself photography through experience and online tutorials.
I’ve been learning and improving for over 10 years now through trips, friend’s events and portraits of friends. Since I’ve started shooting professionally, I’ve been shooting weddings, events and portraits and I’ve really enjoyed working with clients to get the photos that they are happy with. Photography has always been a passion and I’m glad that I can make it a profession as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a new business is never a smooth road, especially in such a competitive market.
Learning to take great photos was definitely a long journey. Along the way every shoot I go on I try to improve my photos and I continue this same mentality with all the photos I take today. It doesn’t always work, but I’m always learning.
After starting to shoot professionally, the biggest challenge has been finding clients with all the photographers out there. Once I’ve booked a client I am willing to do anything I can to make sure the client is happy. This includes climbing on rocks/structures, going through many revisions of the photos or staying to shoot until the client is happy with what we’ve got.
Please tell us about Jimmy Wu Photography.
The business is a one-man photography team that specializes in weddings, events and portraits. The thing I’m most proud of is that I’ve built the company using my own skills from the ground up. What sets me apart from others is that I’m willing to do anything I can to help get the photos that the client is happy with. Whether it’s climbing up a tree to get the right angle or going on a long hike, I’m willing to put in any effort needed.
I’m also proud of all our service men and women and I’m happy to give a discount to anyone who has served/is serving in the military, police and firefighting. I’ve always admired these brave men and women so I’m happy to help them in any way possible.
Since these brave men and women are constantly willing to put their lives on the line, this is the least I can do to help.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would definitely work to get my name out there faster. I would go to meetups and get connected with other professionals in the field, like makeup artists, wedding planners. studios and venue manager. Being connected means that you are brought on to do more projects.
