Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Moody.
Joel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started Revolution in 2010. It was an idea my Dad and I came up with to supplement our passion and maybe make a little side money.
We dove in with only $10,000, took a leap of faith and opened a small 600sq ft store in Leucadia. We built it out and I started working there 7 days a week. Our goal was to bring back the family bike shop. We wanted to be all about helping the people in our community and providing amazing customer service with a smile. Well it snowballed quickly and a year and a half later we moved to our current location in Solana Beach and the business just blew up! Right place, right time, and continuing to help as best we could with everyone whether they rode a tricycle or a $15,000 road bike. We truly wanted to be all things to all people! Now almost 8 years later we have found our niche and dug our feet deep into the community that we love. We have met so many great people and built so many great relationships with people all over the world!
Has it been a smooth road?
Running a business is never smooth. So many ups and downs and figuring out what works is always a challenge. Trying to predict what the market is doing, controlling inventory, and dealing with the growing online side of the business has always been a rocky road. It’s been a learning process but a lot of fun as well!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Revolution Bike Shop story. Tell us more about the business.
Revolution is everything bicycles. This includes road bikes, mountain bikes, adventure bikes, hybrids, beach cruisers, kid’s bikes, electric bikes and everything in between. We have 2 in house bike fitters to get everyone fit properly on whatever bike they ride. A full service team keeps all our customers bikes in perfect shape. We have every part and accessory anyone can ever want or need to compliment what they do on 2 wheels. I am most proud of the reputation we have in the community and beyond. We have a solid core of employees that have been with us since the inception and the open airy feel of the shop provides a cool atmosphere, unlike any other bicycle shop. The other thing that sets us apart is our customers are always our #1 priority! We would rather have a customer for life than make a sale one time. This no pressure attitude and way of doing business sets us apart from anyone else!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry is ever changing. Everyone is trying to re-invent the wheel. The biggest change is brands going to dealer direct sales online.
Trying to keep up with the ease of shopping online and providing our in-house charm over the internet has been an adjustment. We live in a fast paced world and the biking industry is no different. We just have to try and keep up!
