Today we’d like to introduce you to John Atkinson.
John, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I studied Computer Technology in college, earning two degrees in that discipline at Purdue University. I worked in software development for 27 years, creating software, and managing software engineering projects. In 2002, I started my own company as an Information Technology consultant. I’ve been doing that for 15 years, specializing in taking care of technology topics of all kinds for business owners who just want their tech problems solved, and solved quickly.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was a long struggle, learning how to be in business, how to be a business owner, how to invoice and manage my company books. I went through a lot of slow times, until I began doing formal business networking through a local BNI chapter, BNI All Stars. That really changed things for me. I’ve been with BNI All Stars for over five years now.
Please tell us about Atkinson Tech Help.
Atkinson Tech Help is my company. I handle information technology issues for my clients, and those clients are in all sorts of businesses. I specialize in Windows and Mac user support, setting up secure networks, creating wireless networks that cover very large, challenging areas, and just about everything else my customers need. I’m proud that my clients love me. What sets me apart from others in my field is that I’ve worked with computers professionally for over forty years, and I’ve seen all the technology tools we use today as extensions of the technology we used forty years ago. I know how they evolved, because I was there, learning along the way. When I began programming computers, there were no computer monitors, no mouse, no lightweight keyboards, no Internet, no email, no routers — just enormous computers worth millions of dollars that had a fraction of the power of an iPhone. And we ran huge companies with them. I was part of that era, and of all the transitions since then. Since I have a programming background, I have a deep intuition about the relationship between hardware and software, which helps me understand new systems quickly. One thing that sets me apart from others in my field is that I never, ever, ever give up.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have joined a BNI chapter immediately after I opened my own company. That would have made a huge difference.
