Meet John Nelson of The Mallard Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Nelson.

Hi John, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got my barber license in 2015, in San Diego. I was offered a job at a local shop after passing my state board exam. Thus beginning the long strange trip of cutting hair. I worked at that shop for about seven years total. I saw the shop grow along with my clientele and my practice. Upon returning to work after the Covid shutdowns, I realized that if I were to continue barbering it must be in a simpler, less crowded work environment. For my well-being and growth. I began to research the steps necessary in opening my own barbershop. I eventually opened up The Mallard Barbershop in 2022. A one-chair barbershop/studio in University Heights, San Diego.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been blessed with landlords who gave me a shot, family who supports me, and friends who listen. All the obstacles like, finding a location, electricity not working, business phone number getting hacked, supplies running short, attaining the appropriate licensing…those all come and go. So I wouldn’t say the road has been smooth but learning to ebb and flow in the appropriate way can make for a smooth ride.

Since I am a one man operation, The Mallard is me. The shop is a reflection of who I am, whether I like it or not. One of my biggest struggles is ensuring that I react and operate in a way that is reflective of my goal. To treat others how I want to be treated. It’s a struggle to achieve that every day.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Mallard Barbershop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Mallard is a single chair barbershop on Park Blvd in the heart of San Diego. The studio is connected to other self employed businesses such as massage therapy, skin care, and a salon.
I specialize in shorter hair styles. The use of clippers and scissors on almost every haircut. A straight razor shave is applied on the neck after each cut. Beard trims are also done quite frequently.
The Mallard is a pretty intimate environment given the size of the physical space. For which I’m grateful for. It’s become a valuable spot for sharing, listening, seeking advice, and always – goofing. I’m proud to be a part of the community in this way – to provide a place where people can get a good haircut and express themselves freely. I’m quite humbled more than proud. But indeed, very proud to play the barber role in many San Diegans lives. If you know me, I will often talk about “my clients”. Some of which have let me cut their hair for ten years now. I have learned so much from these guys and have been treated with a lot of love over the years. I’m extremely thankful for my clients(who are just as weird as I am).

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I love classical music. Everyone knows that I love music – ranging from thrash metal, psychedelic, folk, hip hop, and rock but few know about my affection for the classical. I keep it pretty private because it feels so personal. I don’t want to talk about it. I dont know how to talk about it. I just find it to be extraordinary. Listening to Vivaldi with my one year old son is the best. I can’t tell if he likes it or not but he listens very carefully when its on.
