Meet Johnay Douglass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnay Douglass.

Hi Johnay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have a scrub uniform business, started out east side of Indianapolis. I started off as a full time medical assistant wearing scrubs five days a week on a budget and could not afford multiple scrub uniforms. The scrubs that I could afford I could not properly fit because of the style and I was more curvy than most. One wash and the scrubs then became dingy and distasteful so I thought more into it. I spent $65 on my first pair of high quality scrubs and still no proper fit to my shape. The quality was good and the thickness of the scrubs was also great but it was too tight in areas and two big in the rest of the areas. If I go a size up it was falling off of me and if I went a size down it would not go over my thigh. So I then started to do my own era search on how to get my own scrub business where to start how to start and who to start with. I got on multiple website ordering samples from vendors for over 6 month’s experiencing different sets and qualities and then landed a match & teamed up with a vendor in China directly. I then registered my business in my state and targeted highschools, my friends, and co workers and how to become successful with getting affordable scrub uniforms to curvy women, skinny women, and even plus size women. Scrubs became a passion for me, wearing scrubs 6/7 days a week for more then 8 hours you want to be comfortable as possible and be able to rewear it over and over. My plan is to target the shelters, jails, and school medical programs to open opportunities for those who have gave up on there dreams. Scrub uniforms has became so expensive and we still need nurses, doctored, daycares, salons, and even cleaning teams to be comfortable in their place of business with the help of my company providing affordable scrub uniforms with benefits.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles along the way is having a husband in the military who you’ve had to pick up and move across the world for to support his career and still trying to build clientele. I have also had a bump in the road during covid trying to pick a business off the ground right at the start of covid so no door to door foot work, in that time I spent building up my brand. Essential workers was still a thing and scrub uniforms became an essential need. So many shipping delays and my vendor started to mess up orders I did not know how I was going to manage during such terrible pandemic.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am 27 years old, l am a mother of 3 girls & also a military spouse of 3 years. I started off graduating high-school really early with college credits and was told that I could not attend a four year college with the help of financial aid due to me graduating early. So instead of taking a break I joined a medical assistant & LPN nursing community college to pursue medical assistant and then to become a LPN. I had to still pay for college on my own but being in class from 8am to 6pm there was no way I could keep a regular job. I went to menards and got $400 worth of cleaning supplies. Started a LLC for $100 and then got $10 business insurance and called my business Jay’s cleaning service where I started to clean homes and businesses at night just to make my college payment and pay all of my bills. I lived alone and barley had enough to make ends meet. I knew leaving high school I wanted to become a HOSPITAL CEO and I was going to do it by all means. I felt like going to college for health care administration was not something I wanted to do being that you can not manage a company you know nothing about. I could not start off at the top then I would not understand the place of business so nursing for 7 years I then graduated for health care administration 2022 and now I am building towards that ceo position. Being the CEO of the hospital every employee will be wearing scrub uniforms that my company produce.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family that I created makes me happy, also my patients and my staff by doing what I love makes them happy.
