Meet Johnny Magaña and David Rivera of Our Second Home in Chula Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Magaña and David Rivera.

Johnny and David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started back in high school. Johnny (Vocalist) was searching for a drummer to be part of a band he was looking form but had no luck. David (Vocals/Bass) at the time was searching for people to form a band for the High School Talent show. David came across Johnny’s post online searching for a drummer and recommended his friend Esteban (Former/Founding Drummer). Although Johnny’s band didn’t work out, he offered to help David with the Talent show and the founding lineup of Our Second Home was born. Between Early 2014 and Mid 2015, we played under different names together until we finally settled on Our Second Home. We remained inactive from late 2015 to mid-2016 due to us not having a committed guitarist until David pointed out the excellent guitar playing in one of the bands our former drummer was recording. They asked him to join, he agreed and we wrote/recorded our first demos “My World is One of Agony” and “Visions of Catastrophe”. Gerardo, a guitarist who had previously tried out for OSH, heard the demos, took interest and asked to rejoin. We agreed and our current lineup (minus drummer) came to be. Since then we’ve gone to share the stage with many amazing local and national artists/bands and have pushed hard to spread our name throughout San Diego and Los Angeles. Our first full-length album is set to release on October 18th, 2019.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Money has been the biggest obstacle we’ve faced as a band. Being in a band is quite expensive, us being in our early to mid 20’s don’t have a lot of money to just put into the band whenever we want. There have been moments where we’re driving home from an out of town show and we weren’t sure if we had enough gas/money to make it home, as well as times where we had to skip meals in order to save our money while out of town. In the end, the experiences we gained were worth the struggle. The second biggest obstacle we’ve faced is losing our founding drummer. He moved to Georgia last year, it was sad to see him go and that meant we couldn’t play shows for a while. Luckily, it gave us time to focus on being in the studio.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Our Second Home story. Tell us more about the business.
Our Second Home is all about bringing people together for a night of metal and worry-free fun. Our name represents what music is to us, and how we feel when we are playing or attending a concert/show. Although we don’t strive to sound like anyone else, we take inspiration from bands in the metal genre primarily from the 00’s as well as the 80’s. With our upcoming full-length album, we hope to deliver a brand new modern metal sound for those who appreciate the genre.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Our Second Home has been quite lucky in the opportunities we’ve received. Our first show was also our first headliner show due to the original headliner dropping and a friend of ours asking us to take the spot. The show drew great and that was a great beginning to our live show experiences as OSH. We’ve been given many great opportunities to share the stage with bands such as Slaughter to Prevail, The Browning, Confide & many more. We were even lucky enough to get one free recording by Audio Fifty-One Studio, which led us to recording our entire full-length album with them.
