Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Vasquez.
Johnny, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Although I was always fascinated with photography it didn’t catch my full attention until 2008 when I purchased my first DSLR camera. I would take photos here and there as a hobby but would eventually stop using it for a couple of years. In 2012 I picked my camera back up and told myself that I would learn to master photography and study the craft. It was then that I decided to take photography more serious and have not stopped taking photos since. It is something that I am very passionate about and enjoy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Photography has not been a smooth road. My biggest struggle was finding a style and look that would brand myself. I started as a landscape photographer but over the years branched out to wedding and portrait photography as well as lifestyle and travel. As a perfectionist, (which I am sure most photographers are) I had to realize that my photos will never be perfect because I will always continue to learn, adapt and get better as my skills continue to develop. I recently quit my full-time job to pursue photography and cinematography full time. It has not been easy but I am glad that I can now dedicate 100% of my time and effort to this art. I owe it to and thank my wife for pushing me to strive for the stars when even I didn’t think that I could do it.
Tell us more about your work.
My main focus and drive right now is lifestyle and travel photography. Working with brands while traveling is the ultimate dream. While I still do the occasional wedding and portrait sessions I will say that lifestyle and travel are what I specialize in and what I am known for. My proudest moment thus far would be having brands reach out and approach me to collaborate and work with them which has truly been a dream come true. I would say what sets me apart is my unique style which I have also been able to translate into video work for companies as well.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have learned that you have to create your luck. Networking with people within the field of photography is important and has landed me some great opportunities. I also believe that nothing will be handed to you and you must put in 110% into whatever it is that you are passionate about.
