Today we’d like to introduce you to Joleen Brims.
Joleen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After decades in the corporate world, I left to be a stay-at-home-mom. When the kids began school full time, and not wanting to return to the corporate life, it seemed to be perfect timing when I received an email from The Bouncing Bead indicating that it was for sale. Since I LOVE jewelry and people, my husband and I decided that we should take a chance and buy the store. Six years later, here we are, still going strong!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been smooth sailing. Since this is the first business I’ve owned, the learning curve is steep. With lots of guidance from hubby, I have learned a lot – mostly by making mistakes. That seems to be the way learning sticks with me. My biggest hurdle has been being in charge of employees. Being in charge of a large corporation is definitely not the same as being in charge of your own small business.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Bouncing Bead story. Tell us more about it.
The Bouncing Bead is a store that sells all the tools and beading supplies for do-it-yourself jewelry making. We offer classes for students to learn different bead weaving stitches, wire working and metalsmithing. We have one of the largest selections of seed beads in San Diego. Happily, we are known for seed beads and our excellent customer service. I am very proud to say that we provide not only supplies but a whole experience when you come into our store.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel am very lucky to have such a great husband (going on 19 years now). He is always supportive and very intelligent. It is very fortuitous that I have this business, as the sale of The Bouncing Bead was perfect timing in my life. I have also had unique opportunities to purchase one-of-a-kind items for this store. which is what I try to offer: things that other stores don’t carry,
