Meet Jordan Christian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Christian.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was interested in art from a young age. My dad was a table draftsman and I used to watch him drawing plans with the different weighted pencils. I remember thinking it was okay to color outside the lines. In college I studied painting and discovered abstraction via the modernists and some postmodern painters. Twombly, Richter, Motherwell, Lichtenstein, Franz Kline, and DeKooning were all big influences for me.

Please tell us about your art.
I make large scale abstract oil paintings that tend to be more organic than geometric and usually have some traces of figurative elements or mark-making among the otherwise abstract ground. More and more the figure or the lone figure seems to be coming back as an anchor point for me in the paintings. Ultimately I hope viewers can share a visceral or emotional response to the work- that they’ll see some pattern or some abstract expression of something that will resonate or hit home in a certain way that is somehow comforting. There’s also a spiritual component to the work.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
There are lots of junctures in life that require sacrifices, and it’s really up to each individual which course they take. There is no “right” way. Finding a way to preserve time in the studio is obviously important, but I would say not to be discouraged even during seasons where work or life take over more. In the long run those times often imbue the work with more character.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Most often my work can be seen at Logan Creative, the artist collective space where my studio is. My website is also a great way to quickly view much of my work, though seeing it in person is always better. I can be contacted through my website to arrange an appointment to view the work at my studio.
