Meet Jordan McLaughlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan McLaughlin.

Jordan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started DJ’ing right after college. At first, I picked it up as a hobby, but shortly thereafter, it became more than that. Once I played my first “show” in front of people, I got the itch to progress and got better. I saw it as “the better I get, the better the crowds.” That’s exactly what happened. About three or so years into being a DJ, I started playing with production. Being able to sit back and see where my production was five years ago, to today, is wild in my eyes. Being able to have tracks released on labels like Rough Records, Wicked records, MMXVAC and DirtySnatcha Records iS an accomplishment I didn’t ever think I’d get to experience. I then linked up with another up and coming producer, Autokorekt.

And about a year ago we started our own collective for up and coming artists. We now have about 15 artists and a handful of photographers/videographers. Its been one wild ride that’s isn’t close to being over yet. When I started this collective is was to bring names into the limelight. Guys that keep getting looked over. Now that we have this, I’ve been able to take them to Vegas for shows, to LA and have had one in our own backyard of San Diego. Its a good feeling seeing one of my Deadweight boys get the exposure they weren’t necessarily getting a chance at. With this, by the end of the year, I’m starting a Las Vegas team as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not as smooth as some people make it out to be. The music industry in a whole is tough. One thing I needed to learn to come to terms within the beginning was the word “no.” You’re told “no” abt 75% more times than “yes.” Once you realize that. It kind of makes you battle a little harder to get those approvals.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a DJ/Producer, as well as owner and CEO of Deadweight productions. The music I make is all heavy bass dubstep, riddim and an occasional trap tune. Same kind of goes with my collective. All my artists are bass related, whether it be trap, experimental, bass house or dubstep.

What I’m most proud of when it comes to Deadweight is the artists I have and their love and dedication to the art. It’s inspiring. On top of that, the family atmosphere we’ve set up keeps them grinding after their goals day in and day out. That’s what I’m most proud of, and I can honestly say that alone sets us apart from other collectives out there. I know a lot of artists in the scene. And IDK if half of them grind as hard as the Deadweight boys do.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about San Diego. I’m born and raised here, so this is forever home to me. Where else can u drive 45 minutes to some snow in Julian or 20 minutes to the beach? Not many places. Traffic here though sucks, that may be the only thing I cant stand about San Diego. But that’s about it haha.
