Meet Jose Anguiano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Anguiano.

Jose, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
This all started when I was 16 years old back in 1996 when I recorded my first professional song titled “Till I Die.” That San Diego anthem is what started it all. I recorded this song on a Sunday and I liked it so much I went to Jammin Z90 the local radio station to try and get somebody’s professional opinion. The DJ who was playing music that Sunday, turned me down at the door and told me to come back Mon-Fri 8-5 during regular business hours.

As I was driving out of the parking lot, I noticed a van with the station’s decals and a woman driving so I turned around and gave it another shot. She actually turned me down too and told me to come back during business hours but I persisted and asked for one minute of her time. She said ok I’ll give you one minute in my office. So once in the station, I hand her the disc and I told her to give it a listen and tell me what she thought. She played one verse and hook then she turned it off, I thought it was over for me.

Then she turns around and asks, who wrote and performed this? I said me. Who produced it? I said Steve Vicious. Then she went on to tell me I had one minute to call whoever I wanted to tell them I was going to be on the radio after commercials! I was like WHAT?! Little did I know I had just met Lisa Vasquez the program director for the station at the time. The rest is history!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t always smooth. I had to learn things the hard way. I mean I was 16 and sold 50,000 out the trunk at $7 apiece with no financial guidance or management before I got signed to a record label.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I do rap music. I specialize in telling my story through my music. I’m best known for being unique and sounding like no one else. My style and delivery set me apart from anyone.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Going to Disneyland with my dad when I was nine.
