Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Usaty.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joseph. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out working for my dad (General contractor) back in CT. I was maybe 13 or 14 just moving lumber piles from one side of a job-site to the other. Then after a few months my dad handed me a hammer, then a few more months, a tape measure, and after a few years I had a decent number of tools, but more importantly the knowledge of how to use them properly to get the tasks at hand done. After working for my dad for a while and learning about what goes into building residential homes (framing, plumbing, electrical, windows, doors, flooring, finish…. etc.) I wanted to learn the one thing my dad never did, HVAC. I ended up graduating from Lincoln technical institute in 2008 I believe with a HVAC certification. Worked for a few HVAC company’s in Connecticut, it wasn’t for me though. Learned a lot, just didn’t really like the work as much. Attics in the summer 130 degrees gets to you after a few years. Then I decided to move to San Diego I love this city. I worked for a few company’s out here and saw how they were doing things out here and I realized; I can do that too. I always wanted my own business, just felt like I needed to take the plunge. That’s how I got where I’m at today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, when I first started maybe about four months in, my truck got stolen. That one hurt. I had to go back to working for other people for a couple months so I could buy another truck and tools. I had a great friend Emory, who recently passed away loan me the money to buy a truck. He is very much missed. If it wasn’t for him helping me out, I don’t know if I would have been able to get back on my feet.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Well right now I’m a very small outfit most of the time, just me and one other guy. When bigger things come up, I’ll bring in others. I specialize in a lot I guess, now that I think of it, it’s very rare for me to turn something down. I like doing finish work, something that is seen and on display for the homeowner, the thing that when you walk into someone’s house you look at and go “wow that’s great, who built that for you?” I take serious pride in things like that, sometimes to a fault, I’ll spend hours on some interesting intricate design making it perfect.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely I think this place is great, from the ocean to the weather, the people are great and lately there’s been no traffic due to covid which is always a plus.
