Today we’d like to introduce you to Josiah Hayes.
Hi Josiah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
BRACE FOR IMPACT – My only thought, as I prepared to absorb the impact from a highspeed motocross jump gone wrong.
At 17 years of age, permanently losing your voice had its challenges. Challenges that I still face today 20 years later. I collapsed my trachea and severed the nerves to my vocal cords. The blunt impact of my throat crushing into handlebars with a force great enough to bend the metal crossbar with my throat alone reduced my voice to whisper instantaneously and forever.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My opinion – Your mindset is what paves the condition of the road you travel. Struggles present themselves constantly in different forms with my circumstance. But in my experience, adversity is what will make you learn and grow the most.
You have to try and spin the situation to your advantage as much as possible, make your disadvantage your strength.
I try and surround myself with people that challenge me to grow and people that will tell the hard truths when needed. It is all too easy to take things for granted. You might not know what you have until it’s gone but there is so much more to be found once you HAVE lost something. Change your perspective!
Will you have a victim mentality, look for an excuse, a reason to quit or will you take ownership of the situation and face the challenges you’re presented with? Choose to push forward!
I am now a father of two beautiful girls, a 4-year-old, a 4-month-old and a beautiful wife I’ve been married to for 12 years. I still ride motocross, I enjoy camping with my family and friends at the local beaches and deserts, I shoot Archery – compound bow, surf and play the electric guitar. I am also the lead singer of a band (Just kidding, my whisper wouldn’t cut it!).
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Straight Arrow Plumbing?
I am the proud owner of Straight Arrow Plumbing. I have been plumbing for 20 years and I’ve worked on just about every type of building in San Diego. I specialize in plumbing construction as well as service and repair. Most of the work that has been coming my way lately is tankless hot water heaters, hot water recirculation systems (why waste water waiting for it to get hot) and plumbing systems for single-family homes as well as ADU’s (guest houses). I have built complete plumbing systems for residential single-family homes, large custom home estates, restaurants, commercial buildings, student housing, apartments, public works projects and military buildings. I am a second-generation plumber. I started in the trade with my father in 2002.
