Meet Joyce Estolas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Estolas.

Joyce, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Joyce Estolas. Before I started this semi-permanent make-up journey, I was a full-time registered dental assistant for five years, while taking prerequisites to become a dentist. My dream was always to be a part of the dental field ever since it helped me gain confidence in myself. I wanted to do that for people who were in the same situation as me. I wanted to do everything and be everything (dentist, cosmetics/beauty, tattoo artist, chef, mom/wife). But I needed to stick to my original plan. I had a “finish-what-you’ve-started-before-you-start-something-else” mentality.

I became a new mom in 2017. Right now, I’m living the dream as a stay-at-home mom and personal chef to my family. MOM/WIFE. (check!) CHEF. (check!) Now all I have left to do is something where I can still be a full-time mom, help build a solid foundation for my family, and still go back to school to become a dentist. I needed to find a hobby, fast. Having an interest in beauty, I came across microblading and wanted to have my brows done. I just didn’t know where. I started browsing online seeing how much it would cost to even do it by myself. After watching so many videos, I almost bought all the supplies and did it.

Luckily, a friend of mine, Danica (Brows by Danica) was looking for brow models for microblading. I immediately said to myself, “THIS IS IT! I’ll just go to her!”. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not a candidate for that service. That’s when I decided to ask, “HOW?…. would I be able to do this, legally?” Danica introduced me to Jeann McSwain. She is my mentor/trainer for microblading. It was a life-changing experience and I’m so happy I did this and stepped out of my comfort zone. For semi-permanent makeup, I learned that you don’t go to someone who can just “do the job” or who’s cheaper. You choose based on the art of the artist. Choose wisely. This is your face that we’re talking about!

I became a licensed body art practitioner. A tattoo artist, that specializes in semi-permanent cosmetics. TATTOO. (check!) BEAUTY. (check!) I can do THIS without pausing anything I was doing. I can use this career to help pay for dental school. My life was falling back into place. I have everything I’ve ever wanted + more, in the time frame I planned. I’m thankful for my supportive husband and parents, for providing a life for me where I can do anything I set my mind to.

I’m happy the way everything turned out and wouldn’t change anything about it. Everyone writes their own story. “An unexamined life is not worth living”-Socrates

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No. was not smooth at all. It’s a career where you make your schedule, but you “work” more than the 9-5 and you DON’T get a regular paycheck. There are dry months in the beginning. So, all you can do is, “KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!” I run my business in the middle of the night while doing some house chores (all while my family is sleeping). I’ve become, nocturnal.

I’m also not the type to “sell” myself. When I say sell, I mean, my way of microblading eyebrows or doing permanent makeup. I always ask myself, “Am I doing enough?” You’re always trying to figure out ways to market, what sells and what doesn’t, and how to gain and maintain a steady clientele. In the beginning, I was so eager to start. You have to explain a lot to potential clients. Thanks to technology, it’s way easier to just post information online or reply to inquiries by e-mail.

There are a lot of people out there doing permanent makeup. You think it can be a competition, but it doesn’t have to be! Everyone’s style/technique is different. It doesn’t have to be the same. As a trainer for microblading, I would tell my students, “You can use techniques you’ve learned from others as a reference. Your style doesn’t have to necessarily be exactly what everyone else is doing. Make your art, YOURS.”

Please tell us about your business.
BROWS BY JE specializes in semi-permanent cosmetics: microblading, microshading & BB-GLOW (application of pigmented serums carefully chosen to help even out your skin tone, rehydrate and help with collagen reproduction).

Every artist is different and has a unique style. For me, I try to go as natural as possible and mimic the direction of your eyebrow hairs. I want to do enough where the eyebrows still look full without makeup and where the client is still able to change the shape they you wanted. Slowly building brows with semi-permanent makeup gives you a chance to get used to fuller brows, rather than having brows that drastically change your entire look (though you can if you wanted). It’s not every day that you get a tattoo on your face. The choice is yours!

With proper healing & following aftercare instructions, the results leave you with spending less time in the mirror and just spending time bettering yourself on the inside rather than focusing on the outside. Let me do all the work for you!

All the services I provide, I have done on myself prior. With this, it is easier for me to explain to clients exactly how it feels and help ease their mind throughout the whole process. I am learning every day and I plan to add more services in the future.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
To all the people who have supported me, my family, (especially my son & my husband Darrell) have played a major role in the success of my business by providing me with stability and giving me so much love. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I strive to be a good role model/example for my son, and someone he can be proud of. I want to show him he can be anything he sets his mind to and do it with passion. Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.

My clients, without them, my business wouldn’t be moving. Thank you for spreading the word and trusting me to do your semi-permanent makeup.

My mentor Jeann McSwain (Pure Beauty by Jeann) and Danica Parabot (Brows by Danica), for introducing me and making me more knowledgeable about the world the semi-permanent cosmetics. Lynda Toovey (Spa Piel, La Mesa) for providing me home to start my business and begin building clientele. Linda Tran (HD Spa & Salon, Escondido) for also providing a space for me to currently do what I love. It’s hard to find a place + people who are right for you and your business. I am happy we all crossed paths. I feel lucky to know people like you.

To the family/friends who have supported me along the way. Thanks for listening and being there whenever I need you.
