Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Wynne.
Julie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up with holistic medicine. Our mother was a therapist and found that talk therapy alone wasn’t enough to heal her patients. She was always investigating new methods to help them. It was in the 1970’s and she was into Jungian psychology, practicing meditation, Kundalini yoga, organic gardening, vegetarian diet…all of which we learned about as children. My father, step-mother and uncle all worked the medical field as well.
When I was 17 I attended a Quaker college in NY city and East Africa. I initially wanted to be a video artist and did find work in my field in NY and in film in Africa. I also had various jobs teaching and for the US government while overseas. I saw a great need for health care in Africa and felt that I could make the most direct positive impact on people’s lives by working in medicine. I had always wanted to be of “service”. I ended up going back to what I’d been taught in childhood for my profession. My original plan was to return to Africa after I finished grad school. By the time I finished I had 2 young boys and decided to raise them in the States. So, I’ve had a practice in San Diego for the past 20 years.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Single parenting of two boys, while dealing with my own health issues was sometimes challenging. I experienced a lot of loss and grief when I was in my twenties but forced myself to keep going. Also running a business isn’t my forte. However, I’ve managed to be in business for 20 years so I guess I’m learning. I can say I’ve had a lot of support from the community in raising my children. African friends in San Diego use to babysit for me, my neighbor down the street did too and so did my son’s grandmother.
Also, I can thank my meditation teachers Guru Mantra and Meher Bani for helping me stay centered and strong.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Julie Wynne / Absolute Acupuncture story. Tell us more about the business.
I’ve been in practice in San Diego for the past 20 years. I’m a licensed Acupuncturist and herbalist. I also give lifestyle and nutritional advice to patients. I won’t say that I have a specialty for a specific condition however, I see a lot of people for Anxiety/depression, PTSD, all types of pain and infertility. I also treat many other conditions.
I think I’m known for spending a lot of time with patients, my gentle treatments and being thorough. Sometimes I also incorporate a meditative healing technique called “sat name rasayan” in sessions.
As a company I’m proud that I still have patients returning to me that I met right when I got out of school for Oriental Medicine. I think one of the things that sets me apart is the amount of time I spend with patients and my usually calm, healing demeanor.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Oriental Medicine has become more mainstream in the US. When I first started school in 1990 it was seen as on the fringe and we were weirdos (which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing), many people didn’t know what acupuncture was. Most people now have at least heard of acupuncture even if they’ve never experienced it. We are being covered more frequently by insurance and I see that trend continuing to increase. Even the VA sends patients to us.
Also, I think that more people are realizing that they need to be responsible for their health; physical, emotional and spiritual. Many of my patients want to practice preventative medicine and they come to see me before they get sick. I see practitioners of holistic medicine as advisors and guides to help people on their healing path, in addition to performing treatments and giving herbs.
